We are getting July weather in September and the in ground figs are ripening at a nice pace now.

Sep 16 - Best Tasting Unknown and Melanzana (long) ripened a couple of figs today

Also more Melanzanas and Pellegrinos are ripening side by side and hard to tell apart.

Attached a photo of Valoze with the dark red blue pulp compared to Ciccio Nero with dark red pulp.  The Valoze figs also have bright blue tinge  along neck.

Pino, I am quite concerned about your possibly getting indigestions :(  ; perhaps some care packages to destitute zones, like zone 4, could help......kidding!

Marcel

Indigestion not a yuuge issue.  Most figs end up in the freezer for rationing through the year.
Also if I am eating more than a bowl full I eat other tasty foods with them.  Can't think of any food that doesn't taste better accompanied by a delicious ripe fig.

Congratulations on your harvest -- those are figs to dream about growing!

Thanks Christine!
Savoring these beauties is definitely worth all the hard work to collect and grow them.

Its nice when you catch a fig dripping honey.  You know you are in store for a delicious treat!

This fig with its incredible brebas (see my breba post) and consistent and early main crop production is a fig dream come true.

Thanks Tony and Francisco for the kind words.

Also wanted to post these photos of Lattarola and Lattarula picked today, both are excellent candidates for in ground cool climate figs.

As the story goes lattarula was mistakenly named by early migrants thinking it was lattarola.  Lucky they mispelled it so we still have both figs..lol

These figs are good producers and taste is OK.  Can get very sweet if let to ripen fully.
Lattarula clean juicy honey taste while Lattarola is sweet figgy taste.
Lattarola is one of the earliest ripening figs in ground for me.

Pino -- Your harvest looks great.  Two quick questions:  How does Lattarula (which I have) compare to your Fico Bianco (which I don't) for taste, earliness, hardiness, etc?  And what does Lattarola taste like?  Any early variety is interesting.  Thx.

p.s.  Re first question, also compare to White Marseilles if you can.  Thx.

Pino - thanks for posting the photos explaining the difference between Lattarula and Lattarola.  Do you have white marseilles?  Is white marseilles and lattarula basically the same fig?  Like Joe, I would also like to know how lattarula and white marseilles compare to your fico bianco.  Thanks in advance.

Thanks Joe and Angela.

Lattarola taste reminds me of Desert King.  Sweet figgy taste maybe some sugary tones underneath.  Claim to fame for me is that it has been my earliest in ground main crop fig to ripen (w/no season extensions) last 3 years and has been in ground 2 winters.

Lattarula and Fico Bianco are as similar as some say are the mt. etnas similar to each otther.  Exact comparison is tough since figs vary their growth from year to year depending on weather, nutrients, soil, disease pressure, location ...
My lattarula is only 4 years old and has been in ground 2 winters while my Fico Bianco is 23 years in ground and has been my biggest producer for all that time.

Differences I have seen;
FB is bigger and more round, FB is more yellow when ripe, the lattarula seem to stay green, FB more vigorous grower and very healthy with zero signs of FMD.  Taste is the same.  When fully ripe they are very sweet and juicy honey taste.  They are really nice to dry.

So are the observed differences due simply to health and vigour or are they unique strains?  I have several FB drooping and soft and more lattarula so I will post some side by side photos tomorrow.

My White Marseilles is 4 years old and 1 yr in ground has a few figs this year not ripe yet so I haven't had enough expierence with this fig to comment.  I will post the ripe figs later.

Thank you Pino for your reply.

Yesterday got a few ripe LSU Purple.  The pulp colour and taste reminds me of Neveralla but not as sweet and tasty.

Thanks, Pino.  I have Lattarula but the trees are only 2-3 years old.  Even so, I've been pleasantly surprised by the sweet honey flavor.  But like you, I prefer dark figs.

Re LSU Purple, I harvested my first from this variety recently.  I was stunned by the rich flavor, suggesting maple sugar.  I've been told that this variety, more than any other, needs to be REALLY ripe for best flavor -- with a wrinkled and cracked skin.  If rainfall and heat (and varmints) permit, try leaving the figs on 3-4 days longer just to see what difference that makes.

I know I'm not telling you anything that you don't know already, but just to beat the dead horse -- here are two LSU Purple figs that I picked today.  I probably would have left them another day except we're going away tomorrow.

p.s.  The small one was better than the big one.  Maybe the red coloration all the way up into the stem is a tell.

@Joe, Great to see such passion for a fig!
The next bunch I will bag and let them ripen until the cracks are glaring.
Thanks

More fig varieties ripening adding to a very diverse fig plate in colour and taste.
The mid ripening figs adding more berry and tropical complex flavours.

With autumn in the wind the figs are rushing to ripen and some dazzling display of colours and tastes.
This perfectly ripe Sicilian Black JR really shined and is best tasting fig for me so far this year.
I was also impressed with Sierra.  Seems to be the perfect yellow fig, nice size, attractive yellow skin and super sweet honey taste.

Sep 27 - Sierra, Adriatic JH, Purple Portuguese ...

@elruge, Thanks John.  Adriatic JH is a great tasting fig!

@Francisco, thank you for your kind words.
May I draw your attention to the Purple Portuguese fig maybe you recognize it?
Too bad I didn't get a photo of it hanging on the tree it was beautiful the colour, elongated shape and very nice tasting.  The fig was introduced by Sue (Svanessa) same person that introduced Figo Preto and Chico Strawberry and other figs.

Pino,

The  'Purple Portuguese' fig is probably a 're-name' given by non Portuguese speaking persons(s).
Here, nobody would name a fruit like that... local names on the local language.
There are many dark/black figs of all types here,   but I cannot recognize this PP.
May be Sue' source knows the history behind the initial sticks and hopefully where that material came effectively from.

Let's Jaime Sacadura chime in and may have some ideas

It could also happen that it's not a fig from here.

Francisco
