Pot size?

What size pot are most of you using for a mature fig tree? How large a tree can that pot size keep happy and healthy? How often do you have to repot, replace the potting medium, or amend it?
Got pictures?
Thanks!

I can only speak for myself.  I've been doing this for 4 years, so I'm not a seasoned pro.

My default destination is a 10 g "squat" pot.  Often I use smaller pots, but only if I've runout of 10s.  I find the 10's relatively easy to move.  When the planting medium is dry, I can pick them up and carry them.

For the better prospects, I use 13-15 g pots.  To move these, I need a hand truck.

For the best few, I use 25 g pots, if I can find them.

All pots are SIPped.

So far, I've been mainly up-potting.  But I expect to prune roots and refresh medium every 2 years (10 g) to 3 years (15-25 g).

If you take a look at drivewayfarmer's pix on the thread where he is offering plants for sale, you can see what is possible.

SIPped = ?

Here's some clarification on pot sizes that might be useful for some people.

10-Gallon 14 1/2 X 14 1/2
10-Gallon, squat 17 1/4 X 12
15-Gallon 17 1/4 X 15 1/4
15-Gallon, squat 19 1/2 X 12
20-Gallon 19 1/2 X 17
20-Gallon, squat 22 1/4 X 13 1/8
25-Gallon 22 1/4 X 18

I am using 7-10 gallons also, more than that and its a pain in the back.

Also depends how many varieties i grow.  If i had no more than 10 varieties i would take 15-20 gallon pots.

20-25 gal pots. That is the biggest that I can easily lift without a hand truck. I use a light weight mix of 33% Promix, 33% Coco Coir and 33% #4 Perlite. I add 1 gal of soil top-dress ever 6 months. Right now i'm trasplanting 200 Figo Preto Figs into 20-25 gal pots. The goal is to harvest 500 figs per tree/year, by the third year.

Sub-Irrigation Pot. Or sometimes Self Irrigating Pot.

Basically, it a water reservoir in the bottom of the pot, and some from a wicking to draw the water up into the soil.

Lots of factors determine which size I use.
Early spring if I am up up potting newly rooted cuttings I will go right to a 15. Right now since my season is 1/2 over I am going into 7-10 gallon pots. Next year those will go to 25's.

Really good productive varieties will get 25's. Everything else I stop at 15's.
For me, there's a moving and storage factor involved. 15's I can move pretty easily. If the plants are to large I can grab one with each hand and move them easily..
25's are heavy, especially wet. Unless your Sid, 25's are a 2 man job.
Some people go 40-50 gallon.. I wouldn't advise it unless your a body builder or have a forklift.
If your up north then 15-25 is a good size and with proper pruning you will get a lot of figs per tree. Down south hopefully you just go in ground and forget pots altogether.

Cliff -- Thanks for filling in for me on the SIP question.

My progression thus far has been...rooted cutting in a solo-sized cup, to 1 gallon, to 3 gallon...and some have been in (i think) 5 gallon SIP's from the big box stores, just cause that's what I had at the time.

I agree that the sweet spot for me is going to be 10 gallon.

My "final" pot size is 15 gallons. Every 3 or 4 years  1/3 of rots need to be removed.
On the way to 15g I use 7 g,
5g,3g, and 1g.
I use black nursery pots.
I have recently started experimenting with biochar and will hopefully have something semi-intelligent to report in the next couple years.

Richard,
The pot size measures, are they outer diameters or inner?

I have a (very) few destined for half barrels but the majority of my pots are 6-gallon HDPE buckets. I have a bunch of trees and I'm in Z6 so I have to move them all into the garage every winter.

The 6-gallon is a standard size for grape-juice-for-wine buckets. So, you ether need to make and drink a lot of wine (blush) or find a place that sells the stuff and make a connection for recycles...

I wrap them in burlap tied with sisal string... And they don't look too bad....

The inner diameter

I use whiskey barrels that are cut in half and buy them at the hardware store.
Before I fill them, I go to Harbor Freight and get a 4 wheel moving dolly and bolt that to the bottom of the barrel. Makes it very easy to move around.
