This fig is currently grown at the famous research center in Ukraine. It was originally collected from Texas under the name Randino in 1932.
This is the breba figs.

These were pictures taken in Ukraine. The grower said that it's a really good fig. I'm wondering if this still exists in this country.

That's a nice looking fig!  If it's growing in Ukraine, can we assume it must be pretty cold hardy?

Figs in Melitopol received from NBS Yalta. In Tuapse climate more favorable for the cultivation of figs . For this reason , I focus on varieties with high taste. Randino interested me in the first place with a lot of Fig first harvest

In my nothern conditions Randino made best result from 10+ cultivars, much better than Dalmatie, Brunswick,Gris de Saint Jean.

Hi Serge, could you tell us what is better about Randino in your climate compared to the other figs? Taste, productivity, cold hardiness,.... ?

Compare to Dalmatie - a bit better condition after winter - 22 to - 30C( -21F) covered the same, 2-nd year you can see figs (breba or main or both), Dalmatie require minimum 3 years in my condition to see first fig. After pinching 4-5 leaf figs appear fast after 2- 3 leaf and can get ripe in my short sommer nearly all (2-3 per each branch).
Dalmatie is not influenced by pinch, and half or more 2-nd crop can not get riped because of cold weather.
Taste nearly as good as Dalmatie, a bit les sugary if rainy or too cold during ripening.
Same nearly no spoil in rain (not like Brunswick).

Randino much better after winter than VDB clone, same covered, size of figs is 1,5 times more, but a bit less sugary, a bit not as rich in taste, but still very good for me.
VDB clone got riped 70 - 40(30%) depends on weather, Randino 80-90%.

Brunswick no sense to compare as it is not reliable in my conditions, wet spoiled, few figs on tree, second crop did not properly riped for couple years.

Grice de Saint Jean - 3 years no ripe fruits, several half ripe, not eadible, awful condition after winter - no sence to compare.

Mission - 3 years - no fruits, after winter so so, one year full die back.

Magarachsky, Yellow unknown - nearly all or figs dropped due to climat conditions.

And so on...

Randino and VDB clone are very productive, Dalmatie a bit less.

After last autumn early frost from sommer weather 20-25 C to - 7C for one night all varieties got damaged.
I expect some figs, most on Randino wich was a bit less damaged, and may be on Dalmatie wich loaded new growth from ground level... but these appeared late enough and I'm not sure if I see much riped.

Serge, thank you for the useful information. This Randino fig looks like a good fig for my climate.

I am surprised that the Brunswick main crop ripens late for you (your summers are warmer than mine). I always thought that Brunswick is an early ripening variety, or at least earlier than VDB.

Thank you Serge! For my area we are consistently in 20-30C range. If we reach 35C it is very rare and only for a day or a few days at a time. My summer is about 3.5-4 months long all depending on how fast winter comes!

In south of Ukraine ( Melitipol) Brunswick is a bit earlier than VDB, but for me it has not shown good results as VDB and Randino gives figs very fast after 5 leaf pinch (count down start noticeably earlier) than Brunswick after pinch, that could be the reason why my Randino and VDB clone result is much better than on Brunswick.
Second crop figlets appear too late on mine.
May be with age last one will improove its ripening. Or I get rid of it as I am promised several early varieties for tests (thanks to these persons in advance for their generous offer).

According to book issued in Crimean Nikitas botanic garden Randino is in same terms of ripening as Dalmatie (around). But pinching make miracle on Randino and VDB and do not influence on Dalmatie. Randino start ripening a week or a bit earlier than Dalmatie (mid September here) and finish most of them till mid October.

After pinch a few Brebas.
This year after autumn frost damade was only one Breba mid August. This year May was cold and June was wet and also cold enough.
Previous years most common - begining of August.
One year was end of July.

Thanks Serge, I appreciate the information! It sounds like on a good season I could get some nice Brebas and most of the main crop. The timing of the Brebas would line up nice for my zone I think.

One pal from south of Ukraine had more breba than main on his Randino in 20 liter pot. Looks like all depends how you cut or pinch branches of the variety.

I think that this Randino fig looks very similar to Longue d'août. Maybe they are the same. There are small differences, but this could be due to climatic conditions. Is anybody growing both of these figs?

You're right, the color and shape seem different. LDA is a bit more red. Also I'm not sure bass would have posted of they weren't different

Both figs and leaves look very similar but I see the difference!  
The comparison gets complicated even more since there is variability in the leaves (post #8) and fruit.

I have a fig Melanzana AF that many people have said looks LdA but I think it looks a lot more like Randino.  Is Randiino in circulation in Italy?

Interesting comparison... so Melanzana (isn't that italian for eggplant?) and Randino may be the same or closely related but different than Brunswick? In any case, I think that Randino/Melanzana are very desirable if as cold hardy as suggested....  I would be interested in cuttings if available... Thanks!

Randino is much superior than Brunswick.
Randino is in circulation in Ukraine, sourse Nikita Botanik garden in Yalta, Crimea. By Crimea NBG this was reseived from Texas (USA).
Now Crimea occupied by russian troops, so now Randino can be distributed in Russia...
I can attach book for hundreds varieties descriptions made by NBS, but only in Russian language if it can help...

The subtleties of the language are sometimes lost to us in the translation and perhaps in the conversation between you, that is not necessarily a bad thing...   :-)  In any case a US sourcing for Randino / Melanzana would be desired as import restriction make it very challenging to source from outside US borders. Thank you both for your input and feedback and please do provide additional and continued info on the interesting and desirable cultivars available in your regions.... The fig unites us....

pverdes3 ,Hey. I have Randin from 3 different sources. I have to check the figs on all plants in the description of the identity "of sorts of figs," NBS Yalta. This - the only source of detailed descriptions of pomological Randin. I suppose that some Ukrainian growers are varieties of figs like Randin. Maybe it Brunswick and Long de Out.
