setting on the refrigerator was too low, and small amount of ice deposits were on my cuttings.
The cuttings are local unknowns that i can get again, but i am curious as to saving these cuttings. does the ice on the cuttings mean the cuttings froze and are "RIP" ?

Happened to me once. Rub the bark, see if it comes off

You'll never know ... But to root them and see what they can do.
Last winter, I stored 5 cuttings in a bottle of water that stayed outside the whole winter.
The cuttings made leaves at Spring time, but I lost them due to bad luck.
So they were alive despite the freeze - thaw cycles. So ice is not a problem ... normally ...

I have similar story as jdsfrance.

I tried to root two unknown fig cuttings late last fall in 16 oz clear plastic cup. They were outside under shed. There was no visible progress (no leaf nor root) after almost two months then winter came. I was pretty much ignoring them and left them outside over the winter. Last winter here was mild, only a few days of snow.

After spring arrived, they surprised me with roots visible from clear cup and leaves short after. Both of them are growing well this season.

Anyone know of about how long cuttings will be viable if refrigerated ?
