Repotting

First post! First fig trees (Chicago Hardy & Marseilles Black) arrived in 1 gallon pots and look great.  I have searched this forum high and low and learned a lot but can't find or am confused about the answer to this question:
I would think that after my plants have acclimated from traveling, I should repot them in a bigger/biggest possible pot so that they have room to grow and I don't have to repot again for a long time since repotting never helps plant growth.   However, I read some posts that suggest that I should keep them in a small pot until the roots come out and then only upgrade one pot size each time and repot repeatedly.  That's confusing to me.  I plan to keep the trees in a pot since I'm officially in zone 6A, but surrounded by zone 5b.  Looking forward to all your help so I don't mess up these beauties.

I used to think the same thing. One size at a time. I have seen others go from 1 to 20 gal though and they do very well. This year I am changing things up.
My new starts will go from the small tree pots to 7 gal. My 1 gal from last year will go to 15 gal this year and my 3 gal from last year will go to 25 gal.

Also both those varieties will do fine in ground in your zone. My hardy Chicago has been in ground for 7 years now. Some years it dies back to the ground but always sends out new shoots.
