Hello all,

I'm a newbie and would like to start growing my own figs.  I live in Toronto, Canada and would like to grow figs in pots.  Does anyone here is kind enough to share some of your cuttings to a newbie like me?  I would be very grateful.

Hi Ted & welcome to the forum.  I see you just joined a few hours ago.  I'm fairly new myself.

I can tell you that the forum members here are extremely friendly, helpful, and very generous.  In my first post on this forum I casually mentioned that one of the plants I was hoping to add was a LSU Hollier and within a couple of hours a member had messaged me and offered to send some of his Hollier cuttings, which he did.

You'll find that most people have cuttings available in the fall when they prune and my best recommendation is to simply participate and share your knowledge and experiences here and I'm sure you'll soon have more cuttings than you know what to do with. :)

Hello Ted and welcome to the forum. Ditto for Figaro's comments. You may also want to go to the control panel in the top right of the page and add
your Zone. You can get your zone at   http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/

I've never sent plants to Canada. 
 I have some to share but they are this year's tender babies. If you hang on until they are dormant they would travel safer and cheaper.  Maybe ask the experts here what varieties will grow for you and see what comes up.

Welcome from So CA too.  There are outrageous rules for shipping to Canada.  You need to cultivate Canadian figgies!

Welcome Ted. I'm in sw Ontario myself. You might also want to check out this nursery out of Quebec. I bought 8 very healthy plants from them.

Thank you all for the very welcoming and encouraging words.  I am very new to growing figs and I have only tasted figs in Fig Newton cookies and that's it.  I am very curious to know and experience the taste of an actual fig picked fresh from the tree.   For now, I can only image how a fresh fig taste like by looking at some images of figs cut in half and seeing how syrupy, caramel-ly, and succulent it could be (yummy...).  :)

I think my growing zone is zone 5 and therefore would like to grow figs in pots because of the brutal winter we can have here in Toronto.

Since I am new and have no experience in growing figs, I would like to request from anyone kind enough for just 1 or 2 free fig cuttings (I can pay for the postage) that I can start with initially.  At this point, I do not know if I would be successful or not at rooting and growing figs from cuttings but with all the information in this forum, I am looking forward to growing 1 or 2 fig trees myself and perhaps be able to harvest figs fresh from the trees.

@tylerj, thank you for sharing the information regarding Brugmansia.  I think I would order from Brugmansia after I am confident that I can really grow figs from cuttings.  :)  I would like to, for now, experiment rooting and growing figs...  And if I am successful, I would start expanding my horizon in terms of growing figs... :)

ted, it's a wrong time for cuttings. however, there are very generous members in canada that might be able to help you with cuttings in fall/winter. best option is to start with already rooted plant from one of the better known nursery in canada. that way, you won't run into frustration of rooting and all that and you might actually got to taste a fig in shorter time. welcome.

Hey Ted,

Figs are the sweetest things I have ever picked from a tree and ate!  Nothing at all like fig newtons! LOL 
You will throw rocks at newtons, unless you make them yourself.

Just a thought, don't mean to be negative, just sharing my own point of view on the matter. I am a newbie too but I would never expect others to provide free cuttings just because I just started collecting. I actively search for members near me who may have something I want, offer to pay at least for shipping, drive there if offered cuttings or rooted plants, and in general try to put some effort into it. The generosity of forum members should not be exploited.

I agree with both of you. I always offer to pay for cuttings or at least shipping, even a trade if possible. Some people are happy to share for nothing, but I make a note of it in hopes to repay with an exchange in the future.

I agree with you, as a newbie, I make mistake rooting cuttings and kill many cuttings last year.
I am in Canada, If you like to get some fig cuttings, I have one unknown Italian green fig tree, it bears earlier bebra as good as "Desert king", big Main crop with smaller figs with better taste than breba, However, Our climate is too cool at summer so I get only 10% of main crop, in your hotter summer, you probably get more main crop rippen than here.
I can give u some "Hardy Chicago"  cuttings, it is a good fig in your area.
