Reusing potting mix

Would it be unwise to reuse mix that cuttings were started in. Let me rephrase that would it be unwise to start new cuttings in now dry mix that I drown 75 cuttings in springtime ? I have had recent sucess after reading all the suggestiions on this site. Thank you all for that. Since the drownings I have probably had sucess with most of the last 15 cuttings using different but similar methods learned here. Thank you all again will be looking to make more cutting purchases in fall.

Mike...I don't think I would re-use that soil. If you buy you some cuttings, which sometimes are expensive. It would be counter productive to re-use the soil.

Thank you for the reply wasn't what I wanted to hear but a very respected answer

Now I have wondered this as well. I use a 30 gallon bin to mix my soil in. If I take old soul from failed cuttings or soil from a pot that those @ssh#le tree rats dug up. Then mixed that soil with fresh tree bark, compost, and fertilizers. Would it be acceptable then? I ask because I'm cheap lol

Why can't it be reused?

Jarrett,

It shouldn't be reused for cuttings. You can reuse it when up potting an established
plant.Best practice is to place the used media in a clear plastic bag and place it in direct
sun for a week, basically nuking anything within.

Hi,
Old media would become depleted, possibly contain (more) eggs and larvae of insects, possibly contain (more) spores from past mold.
The texture of the mix will be altered in time and it may become hydrophobic and anaerobic.
All of that is not what you want especially if you had to pay for the cuttings.
Put a 10$ tree in a 100$ hole. The potting mix is in the hole ...
Of course you could reuse some with 1/3 of old mix to 2/3 of new mix for instance. That would be less risky.
If you have an unlimited supply or just playing with local free cuttings ... You could reuse the same mix.
Now, If you're counting on each single cutting to become
a tree because they are all already spoken for ... You may want to edge your bets !

I have reused soil from cuttings, but I microwave it first. That's to kill anything living in the dirt.

My potting mix moves with the cuttings into the pot.  If I have any extra (e.g., failed cuttings), I use it in a pot but near the bottom.  I also recycle any sphagnum peat moss that I used to start the cuttings to line the bottom of the pot.

personally, i see absolutely no reason not to re-use it.
There is no reason at all that "old" soil should be anaerobic, or loose anything
if the soil were anaerobic, the previous plant would have been meeting its maker.

If the soil came from a sick plant, thats another matter, depending on what was wrong with it.

The biology in the soil only increases with plants what were previously growing in it.
thats a good thing.
ive never understood the sterile soil philosophy. even with cuttings and seedlings.
In a sterile environment it is much easier for bad microbes to take hold,
than it is if the environment is full of good microbes.
every cutting and seedling ive started, is in soil that is teaming with life.

To me, the ONLY issue is that the organic matter will keep breaking down over time.
in a container, the smaller particles will get washed out.
When ive reused soil in the past, sometimes there is little organic matter, and its mainly perlite and sand
and i just add live compost to give it more OM and live microbes.
