Ripening order

It is time to begin tracking the ripening order of our figs. If each member posts only once with what is ripening each week in his/her yard, and then uses the edit function to update the same post each week, or so, it will keep the thread shorter and neater. ;-))

This season will be different than the ones that have gone before. We have had some unusual weather patterns this season (hot, cold, hot cold, etc.). So things are ripening earlier, but some are dropping without ripening, or ripening as if they were caprifigs.

2008

07-23-2008
The first fig to ripen this season was a Brown Turkey, in a 5g pot, from a UC Davis cutting. A Rattlesnake Island is nearly ripe today, from an in-ground plant, planted about 8 weeks ago, so may still have "pot" influences on its' behavior.

All pots are 5 gallon, unless noted.

Yet this one is good but Nothing is done with it ,not even to give it a proper name.

The end of season is close but some tree will ripe a few good figs even after frost.
There are a lot more fruits near ripe on many trees.
We will see.!!!!

                 2009
I am happy to report:
July 17 2009
First Ripe fruits here in Willingboro NJ
Desert King   breba
Sweet Georg (Viena Fig,from GM collection)Breba
See Pixes Below
Will coment about taste and flavor in a couple of days ,as i leave them longer on tree to get maximum possible flavor.
This Year Desert King is about one week sooner in getting ripe fruits.
Sweet Georg,is an young tree,(second year),and fruited first ,now.
Happy Gardening

I will like to close the description of my 2009 Fig season:
This was the worst Sommer, for figs, with 60 inches of rain for the Year, and the coldest Sommer I met since I grow figs on this Location.
At least a dozen cultivars managed to make ripe fruits in this conditions, but they were totally off color, and most dark figs looked somewhat the same, grey green in color.
Even in this conditions, the taste on these (Willing),cultivars was good enough for fresh consumption, and fig Jam.
The best performer (quality wise),were:
Gino's fig,Marseilles vs black,Atreano,143-36,Hardy Chicago,Scot's Black,Mission(GM),Malta Black,Tacoma Violett.
Marseilles vs black win in harvest size again, but I have a hint that If Atreano will be hardy here, then it will be surpassed by Atreano.
I wish to all a hot dry Sommer in 2010!!

                               2010 Results

Desert King      Breba  07-04 2010    Super duper tasty

I would like to mention that all my figs, except Desert King,(breba fig),are in ground here in the temperate climate of NJ,and the cultivars are getting ripe normally without using any tricks, like greenhouse, getting it in and out of garage etc.

Because the Sommer is hot and cooperating, all the fruits to this point are excellent tasting,no exception.

September and October:

A few young figs produced late crops of main crop fruits and some of them were quite excellent tasting, thow later than normal in getting ripe due to age.
These are:
JH Adriatic
Bataglia Green
Paradiso White
Nero 600m
Sal Corleone
Weeping fig
Late Black
Scott's Black
The year was good but not great in getting fruits ripe.
Sommer heat came late in JUly,then July and August was too hot(100+),and from September 10 it was cooling down to 40 very fast and never got warm again till frost was in at the end of October.
To this date since 1988,---2007 was the year with the best warm climate ,long Sommer for fig,and best tasting ripe fruits.
Wish you a 2007 type Sommer in 2011

I only have three bearing figs right now so my list will be short!

Today, 7/24 I ate my first Jurupa and it was very nice.  One more tomorrow, probably.

I haven't bought any bird netting but have used my pellet gun to discourage the mocking birds.  I have no idea why I saved the nest from one of my cats this past spring!

Zone 6a in NW Arkansas here: have a low chill hour PETIT NEGRONNE 25 miles North of my home in Fayetteville: picked 1st Ripe yesterday, 7/30.
This tree was air-layered from the mother plant less than a year ago, spent the winter in a greenhouse and is now 7' high and still growing! Hard to believe & I can't explain it.
Many more figs to come but 3 other Negronne's not fruited yet, let alone ripe!
Flavor: outstanding, poss. could be a tad sweeter.

8/1 we picked our first BLACK JACK & BLACK MISSION. Our BJ had honey-colored flesh, unlike that shown in Jon's Fig varieties. Both plants are 2 years old  purchased this past spring--NEITHER plant is impressive as to vegetative vigor or quantity of fruit.
Things are really heating up now. So far, have only had to irrigate a handful of times this year, lots of rain--very unusual.
9/25 Yes, VERY unusual: NO HEAT since the end of July!-- Sortof like San Diego coastal weather, come to think of it. But mid-September brought clear days in the 80's = Indian Summer so...
I am beginning to get another round of declicious NEGRONNE.
We'll be lucky to get a dozen GENOA--worst crop in 10 years!

Main

7/25/08 7/28/09 Peter's Honey Yellow pulp. Soft seeds. Can be very sweet if allowed to turn yellow and soften. Flavor delicate, honey-like. Figs have a large eye that is sealed by sap. Susceptible to splitting during times of heavy rain.

7/31/08   8/5/11 8/10/12 Celeste Very small yellow-brown fig, but very sweet, figgy. Didn't drop figs even in the dry weather of this year.

8/7/08  8/15/09 8/14/11  8/15/12 Violette de Bordeaux Purple-Black skin. Dark red flesh. Intense raspberry/pineapple flavor. Lots of seeds. Thin skin. Different, but very good. Splits when wet.

8/14/08  7/28/09 8/14/11 8/10/12 Hardy Chicago Has a berry taste here. Strawberry to raspberry. Holds up great in wet weather. Purple when ripe.

8/19/11 8/30/12 Black Madeira Very good taste in a nearly all black fig. Exceptional, beats all others this year. Will stand a little rain as eye sealed by sugar syrup, but will split. Last fig ripened 11/12/11 still good Ripens thruout september a fig or 3 at a time, very, very good.

9/14/09  9/20/11 Col de Dame (blanca)  Unbelievably strong berry taste this year. Really stands up to rain.

Herman Italian Purple and Marseilles Black are main crop.  I got one or two breba from the Marseilles Black  last May or early June I did not mark it down on my calendar. By the way the Marseilles Black I fine to be very good fig.  This week I am getting a few Stella and Atreano.

The Hardy Chicago and the Violette de Burdeaux are breba.

I am have a terrible time with raccoons.  They are getting my ripe figs before I am able to get them.  I have started to trap them.  So far I have caught a little one.  Hopefully more real soon.

Vern

My first was a ripe Celeste today, though not too dark. 08-16-08
My LSU Purples are swelling and darkening the best.
Brown Turkey has too much plant growth not enough fruit of size & that is dropping? Weather here has cooled not getting above 72 now. Nights in the 50s. Thanks growers.

The date is not updated when I edit my list, so I am adding this note to force it to update the date.

9/1/2008
Fred Born Violette de Bordeaux - ripening now. Good flavor.
Kadota - been ripening last few weeks.
Albququerque UNK #1 (Barbera fig) - ripening now. Good flavor. Taste like sweet cantalopes, no souring, even with our afternoon torrential rains.
Atreano - swelling

9/15/2008
Brunswick - No rains, extremely sweeet, very tasty.
Celeste - Very good, taste of grapes
Los Lunas Fig - Very good
Socorro UNK #3 - Very good

Here in our hoophouse near Kansas City, we have about a zone 9b environment for the figs as opposed to zone 5b outside.  Unusual warm, early Spring temps. started early growth on the figs and then cooler than usual temps. slowed it down.  Ripening was a little later this year than last and naturally will extend longer than last year.  Didn't keep exact records on everything, so some will be estimates.  Guessed early on that I would have at least five dozen figs on the three main trees. More of the HC ripened when small.  HC and Violette de Bordeaux  will likely be done ripening in another couple days, only a few left.

HC and Vd B will both be moved outside this fall after the addition goes on the hoop.   The addition will not be large enough to accommodate all the varieties I have acquired, so Celeste and Brown Turkey will also get to go outside next Spring.  The selected ones that are either more tender (I think) or have Brebas that I want to protect will be planted in-ground in the addition along with four trees that get to reside in the main part of the hoop where residual heat from the south side affords moderated temps. that only got to thirty degrees last winter.  With the planting outside, I should have a longer season for figs than this year.
Some small trees (two from a Missouri grower last summer and the others from Jon last fall) have fruit on them.  Alma has ripened 8 fruit  with a few more to go and LSU Purple ripened one that disappeared and still has a few left.  King and Excel have a few and Nero has one.  I am not skilled enough to know if these young figs will ripen this year, but after last year's experience, I do know to remove them if they do not ripen before cold weather.  I do find several other trees with tiny bumps that make me think they are indeed next year's crop.  Whatever we engage in, it is a learning process.  Am certainly enjoying the fruit of this project!

Like Herman said about Hardy Chicago almost never split same here mine almost never split as well , they did some splitting this year but that was after a very rare weekend which happened to give 9 total inches of rain. the other 4 years tree never split the figs, my EL Sal's split very bad compared to Hardy Chicago i also noted after that weekend mentioned.

Well, I guess I never finished the 2008 ripening order, but it is time to start on 2009 because I had my first ripe fig today. Well, almost. It turned out to be not quite as ripe as it looked, but there are two more right behind it. So, this year's winner is Lyndhurst White. All are in-ground or 15 gallon pot, unless otherwise indicated.

Updates here at Figs 4 Fun AND a lot of good info posted by Dan.

First ripe 20th July was Lattarula followed by Grimo's white fig this week 27th July. The Lattarula was excellent and fruit was left on tree till it started to show signs of shrinkage. Weather was hot at 30*C(86*F) at least.  The first  white fig from Grimo did not taste too yummie. Maybe it had to do with the 2 sudden heavy thunderstorms we had the last 2 evenings inspite of day time temp hitting the 80*F plus mark. Hopefully with such hot,hot weather 90*F plus now, the rest of the White Fig would taste better. Fig size is large.

Other figs in ripening stage and swelling plus turning color are:

Adriano
Negronne
Large Dark Greek
Vicenzo

Hope to post pictures .

30th July 2009 Ripening:

Desert King
Enrico
Unknown Green Fig
Slocan(Swelling)

July 19

Desert King brebas on both potted and in-ground specimens; three total--most of the brebas dropped.  Not as good as the main crop (see note below about main crop).  Probably the “5-7” accession I got from Jon back in 2007.  See http://figs4fun.com/Thumbnail_Desert_King.html

August 15

Negretta (from Gene in DC).  Actually not fully ripe, but birds and ants were beating me to two small ones on a small and young potted specimen on my deck.  Need riper ones to comment further.

August 17

First main-crop from the potted Desert King cited above.  Last year the in-ground bush ripened all of its main-crop figs (birds and squirrels got most of them).  So I seriously doubt that this accession is a San Pedro version of DK.  Skins are tougher than any fig I’ve tried before—to the point of almost being unpalatable.  But the pulp is delicious!

August 21

A potted unidentified variety from a friend and neighbor here in Bethesda.

August 24

First main crop from the in-ground Desert King cited above.

August 25

EL White Marseilles:  Edible Landscaping (EL) apparently has more than one kind of WM, but I do not know which one this is.  It froze back nearly to the ground this past winter (we got down to 2* last January and it was unprotected), so this is one that comes back and successfully ripens fruit after major dieback.  It’s not my favorite—I only like it when extremely ripe when a hint of butter scotch kicks in; but my younger brother and youngest son say they like it more than Hardy Chicago, which I prefer.

August 27

EL Hardy Chicago.

August 28

Black Marseilles VS.

August 29

EL Sals.

Too bad your list isn't applicable to Hawaii.  We have a different order every few hundred foot difference in elevation. At low elevations (200 to 500) I have to harvest   year around, every other day .. Trees only go dormant once  every 3 or 4 years.  Jon -- did I get you Masui Dophon yet?
