SÃO JOÃO PRETO et al.

Does anyone in Europe have cuttings of Sao Joao Preto, Zoundi or Ao-Gol-uden for sale?

I've got a "Sao Joao Preto", but no cuttings available till autumn I'm afraid. It grows like 10 cm per season LOL.

I purchased a plant on ebay from Portugal a couple months ago. The plant was very well rooted and growing strong in my grow room.

There are cuttings on ebay now but I'm a little reluctant to pay what he's asking for them for just two of them - US $40.00 aproximately £32.02.

No wonder they're so expensive lol

The guy I bought mine from has more, here is the link http://www.ebay.com/itm/201680705123?redirect=mobile.

Kelo,
I got mine from Baud Nurseries. You can email him the varities you need and he will give you a quote.
Tiny fish,
Thanks for the link, I'll also check him out for other varieties.

Thank you for those. I'd rather buy a rooted plant than buy cuttings at those prices.

Per the Portuguese documents it is earlier than Lampeira Preta.

I believe these two and other SAN PEDRO's are excellent for growing in pots also for cold (early ripening or short summer) and hot regions (where potted plants get cooked in the heat of the mid-summer).

out of 120 varieties Lampeira and few others are the ones already with Breba's waiting to ripen. BTW my Lampeira is 1 year old and already 6 Brebas that are not aborting.

Regarding the SJ this is a pic i found on the web with description:

Vinny,

Did the São João Preto that you have from Baud gave you figs yet?

I'm asking because my french friend told me that, for the first time, he found a "wrongy" in Baud's collection and it was São João Preto - his tree produced white figs....

He asked me to send him some cuttings of this variety last month and told me to include, if possible, some cuttings for Baud to correct the one he had, so i'm curious about your tree.

Kelo,

That variety is a slow grower, but the ebay listing you mentioned is known for the absurd prices he asks for 2 cuttings...

Jaime,

That's a very good observation and I think you are right about SJP, my SJP brebas were white too. Unfortunately I don't have any pics . I'm wondering what I got now.

Yes, I know. I did find another supplier who will send five cuttings for £32.00.

Vinny, and Jaime (for your friend), isn't there a Branca of Sao Joao? that would be a conceivably easy mix up?

Ha, there you are. How you doing mate?.
I think mine could well be a SJB, however my tree is young and only produced breba on its second year. Too early to make a judgement IMO. I'm hoping to get a good crop this year. Will keep you guys posted.

I knew I'd seen is somewhere, thanks Kelo, fingers crossed Vinny got something nice like that instead of the Preto.Still it's a PitA to get the wrong variety, just goes to show even Baud nurseries might fudge an order occasionally, what chance does anyone else have! Lol.

Good luck with your hunt for SJP,it's not common here,if Vinny doesn't have it no one else in the UK is likely to

I'm going to get some cuttings from Portugal and just wait for them to take root and produce what I expect - IF they are genuine SJP's lol

Kelo,

If they are not true São João Preto i can send some next spring, as i told you. But probably you will only found out 2 years (with luck) from getting the cuttings.

Vinny,

I think São João Branco is probably what you have. It's even slower growing than his black brother. I have my young tree in poor clay soil and it only grows 5-6cm each year. I'm making an air layer so i can have a copy in a container and see if the growth rate improves. I may also graft one cutting on a robust stock.

Thank you, Vinny, I hadn't forgotten. :)

Jaime,
That looks about right. I think there has been some misunderstanding or miscommunication . I emailed Baud to find out more. Anyway the tree came labelled as "Sao Joao", so it could well be "SJB", and the person who send it to baud might've mislabelled it. Anyway I'll try to get the SJP from a friend in Madeira . Thanks again for the pics.
Cheers

Vinny,

Let me know if your friend in Madeira can't get you those cuttings.

Thanks Jaime.
