Sanssouci Palace (in Potsdam, Germany)

Have any of you fig experts visited Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, Germany near Berlin? The terraces (commissioned in the 1700's by Frederick the Great) were used to grow figs and grapes; Frederick must have been as obsessed with figs as some of you all (you know who you are). Each fig tree has it's own small green house!  I was there last year on Easter visiting family; I would love to see it during the summer when the grapes and figs are ripening.  It must be an incredible sight.

I didn't see any labels and I couldn't tell if they were all the same fig variety or not. I think it is roughly Zone 7b. All the fig trees I saw were quite small and heavily pruned; I assumed they had to keep them small so they fit in the niches behind the glass doors.

Thanks for this post.  I've seen photos of these terraces before but unfortunately haven't made it there in person, though I have been in Berlin a couple of times.  I never knew about the real purpose of those structures!  What I do recall is that Berlin in January is bone-chilling cold so I'm sure the fig protection/micro-environment is necessary.

Thanks for sharing. That was very interesting
