I just received the Smith fig i ordered from J.R, I had to repot it because the rootball is pretty good size even thou the tree is only about 30" tall and looking healthy. I like to know how it compare to Chicago Hardy as far as hardeness and growth is. I was just wondering if this tree need to be potted. I am in zone 6b.

Luak, I have a Smith that I have had in the ground for several years.  I am in zone 7, maybe zone 7-8.  I have had a little die back in past years.  It is not near as hardy for me as Chicago Hardy.  Smith does produce wonderful tsting figs.  Good luck with it.

Hi Vern,

In the spring I am going to start a Smith , too. I am in zone 7b of NC. Would like to know if Smith bears figs on new growth in case of freeze damage. If it is not a big secret, could you tell your zip code in AR so that I could look up its climate on weather.com.

Best wishes,

Boris
