So its winter and my fig thinks its summer...

So its winter at the moment in Australia. All the figs around my suburb has lost its leaves and gone dormant for atleast a few weeks now and so have my peach and apricot.
But this fig which i planted a 4months back in the ground is still green and growing. I just noticed it has pushed out another shoot near the base
Any issue with figs not going dormant when it should be??
when i planted it four months back it was in a water logged pot. Once i chucked it in the ground it lost all its leaves in a week and then after a month at the start of autumn we had one last heat spell it started leafing out and hasnt stopped growing and its now winter...

Hi, Given your mild ambient temperatures and the fact that RH seems to be rather high, your plant behaves that way.
Any idea on what' the variety is   ?
Here,  on some very mild seasons, 'black bourjassot'  does that as well, and keep ripening figs through January,   just like it was in Australia...

We had temps this winter such as the ones that you are experiencing now.  And a large portion of my trees broke dormancy because of it.  All was fine until we received three days of windy sub-freezing temps.  With the sap flowing in my trees, I lost four dozen of them to the quick cold-snap.

Having lived through that, I'd maybe suggest that you place some pipe insulation foam around your small trees should you face a sudden down-turn, as your trees are so small now.

Sorry whats RH?

I think on average our morning temps have been around 5c or 41F. It may look sunny in the photo but it was pretty chilli

How cold was your cold snap? our winters are cold here but it doesnt snow. We already had i think 2 days where ive seen frost in the past couple months. I reckon its already been one of the coldest winters for a while tbh. Just googling average temp in melbourne and it says historically lows are around 10c / 50F but i know we been around lows of 3c-5c recently on certain days.

WELL, RH number is the relative humidity.
Here you have my approx weather averages..

http://www.bbc.com/weather/2268339

Normal temps to come down bellow 10ºC but occsionaly, when NE wind blows by Jan or Feb it may come down  to 3 or 4º C
but not for long, we all feel the weather is changing for warmer seasons. Visited a farm today and temp reached 36º , for sure damaging the more exposed Caprifigs.
Never snows..

Forgot to answer Ur other question the fig variety is St Dominique Violette.

I'll probably find something to wrap the main trunk unless I can find a big enough clear bag to conver it

Agree you have to give some consideration on how best to protect your plant through the ongoing season
Trying to find the origins of this St Dominique Violette found this interesting page

with much information and history on a number of varieties grown in Australia.
