So many Varieties! Help me decide. Also container advice?

Hello All,

This is my first post so I apologize if I've missed something.

Id like to buy 4 fig trees that:

- are idea in a container

- Work in Valencia CA Zone 9B without over wintering.

- A little bit rare/unusual (not anything I can get from Dave Wilsons).

-Can be ordered now and are already potted (no cuttings yet). Also preferably from Encanto Farms as I want to support them.

-Are different from each other as far as flavor and colors.

As far as taste,  I like both dark and light figs, but have always found brown turkey to be a bit bland.

I already have a Violette DB, and a Panache. Both are great. From searching he web, UP and Vista seem interesting so far. So with all that, What 4 figs should I add to my garden?

Second Question!

is there a tried and true recipe for containers? I'm looking for a guide that shows step by step exactly what container/soil recipe, fertilizer, and care tips. Something I can copy.

I am in California and do not need/want to over winter. I have found the link on F4F using the pots by  Bill Muzychko. That seems like a good guide, but its a bit old, and also I see he is using "self watering style" pots, which seem like a lot of work to build. I like the idea of the self watering container, but I know some retailers sell them now. I dont mind following exactly what bill has done if its still the best way to go.

Thanks all!!!

I am located in Santa Clarita. PM me and we can meet up and chat about this.

Vista is another fig from the VdB family, so you might want to try a little different path...  maybe one of the better rich-flavored figs such as Zidi, since it doesn't command a huge price tag, due to its requiring the fig wasp that You have there...  and perhaps an Emalyn's Purple, Bourjassote Grise, or Socorro Black for the second?

Welcome to the forum!  I'll leave the recommendations to those in your area but you're off to a great start!

Welcome to the forum Adam.

You can grow anything you'd like in Valencia without having to worry about winter
temps. They'll do fine in containers as well, although I'd stay away from the wildly
vigorous varieties,Black Mission for one.Growing them in containers you'll just
continually up pot,#1 to #5 to #15.In your climate you'll be root bound in a #15
by the end of year two.At that point you'd have to root prune or make the leap to
a larger container.

As far as figs to add you might want to call Jon and see what he has available.I'm
pretty sure a Strawberry Verte would please anyone without breaking the bank.
Black Madeira/Preto although pricey have few peers in regards to taste. Most of
the highest ranked figs taste wise are going to be in the "exotic berry"grouping.

As far as media goes you might want to think about Promix HP for the limited
number of pots you're dealing with.If you want to dive into the deep end of the
pool;

I'm in the KISS camp when it comes to self watering pots, any tray will do.

I would second these suggestions, as well as your choice of UP -Unknown Pastilliere(?) and Paul's Strawberry Verte.
If you're going to buy from Encanto Farms, you really need to talk/email Jon (pitangadiego). He should be able to offer some excellent advice as well.

Tyro is well known for his excellent Figo preto trees. Hopefully you will be able to get some. Violette Dauphine is another one that is very well regarded.

Well Thank you everyone for the warm welcome!

Hopefully Jon can give some recommendations as to what he has. I will notify him of this thread.

I see Paul is in Simi Valley. Thats not too far from me. I would love to come visit and learn!

I should include that since I will have about 6 fig trees, one with a good breba crop would be nice to spread the fruit production out. I know brebas are generally considered inferior, but I'm sure theres gotta be a good producing one. I have been searching other forums, but man there are so many choices!!!

As for pots . Go online and do a search for nursery pots. You can search for 7gal, 10gal and so forth.

Where do you get those trays from?

Tyro, what are those pots you use?

So I went to visit Tyro. Cant say enough good things about my visit. I learned about soil medium using a 5-1-1 or close enough . I think my biggest mistake in my first attempt at container fig trees was soil medium. I was using a commercial cactus mix layered with compost. Then I was using a drip, but I think the soil wasn't holding moisture. Yesterday Livetaswim came over and helped me repot a fig and the medium was heavy and bone dry.

As far as varieties, I kinda started at the top. I got a Black Maderia, A Perto, and a Strawberry Verte. These along with my VDB and Panache, should hold me over for at least a year.

I told Tyro I didn't know exactly what air layering was.  He taught me about air layers and even took one off his tree to re pot.

All of Tyro's figs look super healthy and happy.

Anyways I had a great visit, and I am  happy to have posted on these forums. Lots of kind people here.
Adam
