souther brown turkey

Does anyone have pics of a real "southern brown turkey"
pics of leaves, and fruit, showing size of fruit.

thanks

It is called Southern Brown Turkey and is very common in the south tho many people think they got a Celeste when they grow one, because it is similar but totally different cultivar.
It has a big +:It does not drop fruits under stress like Celeste does.
Here is a Pix from a friend of mine in Rhode Island,(MarryAnne.)
I also have the plant had fruits and can concure it does look exactly like the pix I will post ,from MaryAnne .
Fruits at top of pix:Southern Brown Turkey
Fruits at Bottom of pix :Celeste for reference.
This is the most clear detailed pix of this Variety you will ever find and is a bench mark of representation, for this cultivar.
A very valuable cultivar.

thank you Herman2

Yes it is best to make your own mind, just look at the 2 cultivar in the pix and decide for yourself which one better describe your plant.

I agree. Some Brown Turkeys are not true Southern Brown Turkey. Those others are very bland tasting and give Southern Brown Turkeys a bad name. I collect Southern Brown Turkeys and right now I think I have 10 large ones. If you are lucky and get one like those in Herman's picture, you're in luck! Petals from the Past is were I got 6 of mine. They look just like those in Herman's picture. And the taste is awesome.

Picture of Brown Turkey purchased from Petals from the Past May 2012, approximately 1 year old plant. Picture was taken late September 2012.

Pete,  Does PFTP list as southern BT or just BT?

Its listed as just "Brown Turkey". Its definitely not the "Brown Turkey" sold by Monrovia (California Brown Turkey). Brown Turkeys purchased from Lowes last year are similar to the California Brown Turkey, a large fig with a medium sized open eye. I also have Texas Everbearing and Italian Everbearing which will hopefully ripen figs this year.

Thanks Pete

Here's a picture of a Brown Turkey from Edible Landscaping. The tree has 1 and 3 lobed leaves, mostly 3 lobed as pictured. A few figs are currently at the stagnant stage and are perfectly round, about the size of a quarter. It doesn't resemble any other brown turkey leaves that I've seen pictured.
Is this one of the Southern Brown Turkeys?

<edit> I just found the tag that was shipped with the plant... It was labeled as "English Brown Turkey"

PFTP description:

Brown Turkey$9.00

Small to medium sized, light brown to violet skin with strawberry pulp. Top shaped to oblique, mostly without neck. Excellent Flavor. Small eye has reddish color from very early stage. Celeste does not. Has ability to fruit on new growth if top killed by winter freeze. Also called: Texas Everbearing, Eastern Brown Turkey, Everbearing.   Plants are shipped in 1 gallon sized containers.

Danny's fig is English Brown Turkey, not Southern Brown Turkey.
English BT,is much larger in size, and take a longer hotter Summer to ripe.
It was ripening too slow here in NJ.

Mike,
Thanks. I have a PTFP Brown Turkey. Its pictured in post #6 and I had figs from it last year. The description matches, but it looks nothing like their catalog picture. It actually looks more like pictures of the English Brown Turkey.
This plant purchased from Edible landscaping is completely different. It has mostly 3 lobed leaves and no 5 lobed. Also the figs are small.

Danny,
Thanks. Your pictures are the exact duplicates of the PFTP Brown Turkey. The leaves also match 100%. I personally call them 3 lobed with thumbs, not quite 5 lobed. You can see them in the picture in post #6 (all the leaves left of center).

Herman2,
Thank You. Any thoughts on the Brown Turkey from El. in post #10?

fruits on my brown turkey look like the picture but are not quite as highly colored.  Leaves on mine are quite different from those pictured on this post.  Mine are much more deeply lobed. Lobes look like 5 long thin fingers.  Nursery label simply listed them as plain old "brown turkey".  All my ground layers which are currently in 2 and 3 gal. pots and growing in a potting mix are showing the same leaf shape. Parent plants are growing in a somewhat amended red clay on a south facing slope. Parents are under 5 years old and producing heavily. Up until this year they have not had a strong figgy flavor but that might change this year.  As my husband constantly reminds me, fig plants smell like the local tom cat has taken up residence but this year the aroma around the plants is definitely very figgy even though we are still a couple weeks away from our first pickings.  We are zone 7b. Now I am beginning to wonder what in the wide world of brown turkeys I really have.

Marianna,
My other brown turkey, which I refer to as California Brown turkey has leaves like the attached picture... and figs that resemble Post #11. Can you post a picture?.

Grant,
I apologize for hijacking your Topic, but I also have been looking for the answers to the same questions.
I thought that the PFTF Brown Turkey was an English Brown Turkey from Older posts and pictures.
To date I have not seen any pictures of leaves of the "real" Southern Brown Turkey. The Brown turkey sold by Monrovia and Lowes are the ones that I refer to as California Brown Turkey. Its a Large fig with a medium sized open eye (picture post #11).

*To date I have not seen any pictures of leaves of the "real" Southern Brown Turkey. *
Here it is ,pix of
Southern Brown Turkey,taken today.
Pix in post #10 can be Improved Celeste or Southern BT.#11,and  16 show Ca BT,also DFIC 17 BT,in Ca Collection.

Herman2,
Thank you!
I should be getting a few ripe figs on the Brown Turkey-EL in Post #10. I will add them to this topic at that time.
Judging by the picture the Southern Brown Turkey has some 5 lobed leaves, similar to the English Brown Turkey.

Here is a picture of one of my improved Celeste for comparison...

Hey Pete,
no problem about hijacking the topic.
The more info the better.
I am wondering how early the red eye appears on the southern bt.
I have 2 plants that have come labelled as brown turkey, one just as brown turkey the other as english brown turkey, and the eyes are still white at this time of year on both. Both are small figs when ripe, perhaps a little bigger round than a quarter as in Herman's post #2 above.

Grant,
The eyes of BT from PFTP (English Brown Turkey) had a light pink color around 40-45 days, from my observations last year. In this picture the actual ostiole is pink and the surrounding areas (scales) are white.
Can you post pictures of your leaves for comparison?
Thanks again for starting this topic.

For me in a colder zone(6b),Southern Brown Turkey demonstrated it can ripe properly every year.
That is why it is valuable for us in the north east.
For Texas, and other hot Summer climates,I bet English Brown T,as in post #12(Danny),I think it is the best choice because it is a larger fruit, and when ripe properly,it is a very good quality, fruit, but it needs the warmer Summer to perform properly.

So if the Southern Brown Turkey can do well in 6B I'm sure it will survive 6A climate zone. Now I need to add this to my wishlist.

Some leaf photos of my good Brown Turkey and the main crop from 6-17-13.The eye of the figs on my trees normally turn pink as the fig's skin turns a lighter shade of green to yellow and then red when the fig's skin turns to brown or purple color and ripening is complete.

The third photo is a 3 yo tree from a cutting from the mother tree in the first 2 photos that I planted in my field on 6-07-13.
