Hey guys, long time no........... Does anyone know please - if a fig splits quite badly at the eye end (sorry, don't recall the correct technical term for that part of the fig anatomy) - does that spell the end of ripening? Tried a www search - not much joy there. Put a plastic bag around the fig to stop flying insects taking up residence, and fig was only about 3-4 days away from being fully ripe. Variety is Italian Purple if that helps. Others harvested so far have been fine, and even accidentally discovered that a little over-ripening results in fantastic flavours & levels of sweetness. Texture suffers a little, but that's a trade-off I'm happy to accept. Thanks, Costas

No it does not. It will ripen. It could be a perfect fig. But also it could spoil. Bugs may eat it etc.

If you cover it with an organza bag and snug it down around the stem then tie it to the branch keeping as much of the organza as possible under the strings that will prevent insects from getting at it and almost always that will mean no mold and a good tasting fig as it ripens.
