Unknowns

So, through a bit of cheapness on my part with plant markers (wood is not a good idea) and a bit of bad advice(black paint marker on cuttings) I have 5ish unknown figs. What do you do You do with unknowns? Are they the pass along plants for the neighbors? Do you keep them and try and I.D. them later? Do you toss them?

Thanks in advance for the input.

If you know the id of the 5 just not which one, keep them and id once they fruit.

If you like them, keep them. Only toss them if they're un productive or the flavor isn't the best.
For the ones that I have I give the name of the person or town from where I got them.
I have a;

All figs with names are technically Unknowns. When they produce and spread around they might end up getting names.
Some named varieties become over rated despite being unsuitable for all locations. Also, should I lose a tag, my fig tree automatically becomes an unknown.
I currently have a couple of Unknowns among my trees and they take precedence over many of my named varieties, simply because of history, flavor and overall performance especially in pot.

I agree with Sas, what good is a tree if it doesn't produce for you. I want trees that are reliable , and some of my unknowns fit that bill.

fig varieties don't taste good. Good tasting figs taste good. Lol

I give them two seasons to give me fruit.  If they don't or if the fruit is not good then they are used as root stock if vigorous.  If not vigorous, then in the green waste it goes.

I have an Unknown that I was about to discard last year. Then one morning, I looked at it and it was loaded with figs. It was about four year old. Some of my five year old trees are fruiting for the first time this year.

Thanks everyone for your ideas. The hard reality I see when I go in the garden is that while I do have room for 5 unknown fig starts, I am real close to reaching my limit (for now) on space, and there are easily 10-15 more figs that I'd like to try to grow in the space I have. And as I am finding out those 1 and 3 gallons need to get potted up real quick and every pot up squeezes the limited space some more. So, I will give those unknowns to the neighbors and let them know I might be back for a cutting or some fruit.

THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE!!!

Your help keep us newbs going in the right direction( towards a great tasting harvest).
