So it was time to up-pot, and the container I ended up getting (trying to avoid plastic/resin for long term) is about 24" wide and the same height as the previous pot. But there were quite a few large roots bound up at the bottom of the pot, I hated to just set them down on the bare container, so I put a little bit of soil underneath, and that raised up the tree as you see in the picture. This doesn't seem great, though. On the other hand, in Bill's presentation on container figs, he says to raise the crown 3" above the lip of the pot. This almost accomplishes that goal, but some of the root system is still clearly sticking above the new soil line. But the larger roots are on the bottom. It also seems like I shouldn't prune the roots on such a young tree. What should I do?? (in addition to figuring out my own soil blend, since I now realize it will be way expensive to use organic potting soil in all my up-potting to that large size). (and yes, I know that container will probably fall apart in 5 years, it's not a real barrel).
