They were most surely on new growth. This is the tree I put in the fig doodle early spring and it got frozen all the way back to the soil. Of course it came back and grew massive for one season. Out of six in-ground trees, it's the only one that produced figs and grew like that. It must have been the compost in the fig doodle that caused the growth.
