Violette de Sollies

Frank, sorry to hijack your thread. Elin mentioned that it has a local variety called Adler. I bought a fig tree in a nursery. The tag had only the name "Adler P" and i could not find a single line of information on this variety on the web.

Elin, your Adler is a San Pedro? I am asking because mine is dropping the figs (i think they may be a second crop). Could you check the leaves of my tree and maybe compare with your local variety?

Nice Violette de Solliès figs, Frank.

I managed to get a small cutting of this variety and it rooted with great difficulty. I wasn't very lucky because the small tree has been touch and go. I have never seen such a bad case of FMV but i think it's pulling through.

I hope she shakes some of the FMV and outgrows it, so i can taste a few figs like the one's you showed.

Jaime, no problem with you! Mine is a very strong grower. I love the taste of the Figs. They really are a beautiful plant and Figs!
Sure hope yours grows good, so you can taste this excellent variety! Thanks for the photos,  good Luck! : )

Thank you for sharing this. Those figs look wonderful.

Hey Frank,

I just had my first violette de soleis of the season. See pics. I forgot how good they are! Wow. Thanks for reminding me.

Beautiful fig and tree Frank! Not a spot of FMV on those leaves! Very nice! Looking forward to tasting this one next year.. I hope anyway! Lol! Thanks for sharing :)

Jaime hi,

There a good chance your fig came from Israel as there was exchange of cuttings with portugal (we have alot of portuguese varieties in experimental orchards-like ponte del gada).

I am attaching photos of Adler which according an article -also attached is identical to black italian/Brojoito nero.

also in this post theres a discussion of VDS and BN-http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/show_single_post?pid=1285407226&postcount=16&forum=0

As to your fig it looks like a VDS by the leaf shape. maybe other reason for dropage of figs?

Anyhow i believe i should get a vds and compare these two babies.. :)

Frank,
Beautiful fruit you got there and it looks excatly like VDS I had from France. Mine dropped this year although one is still sticking on the tree. Your leaf looks like VDS too and I don't know what the other bloke was on about lol.

Cheers

Thanks a lot Alan for posting, very good Info and pictures!

Seems to be a beautiful fig and any time someone mentions a comparison to BM, folks take notice. I will have to keep an eye out for it. Thanks

@Frank, great looking fig and nice photos!

@Alan, that is a great story on this fig!  Wouldn't it be great if we had all the great figs stories online?

Also meant to ask how does Violette de Sollies do with breba production are there photos of the brebas?
Thanks

I have one coming from James, via Alan, COME ON JAMES!!

Last August i was writing in this thread:

"I hope my small Violette de Solliès shakes some of the bad FMV case it has and outgrows it, so i can taste a few figs like the one's you showed.

Violette de SolliÃÂÃÆՉہ¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¨s1_Agosto_2016.JPG  .

Well, I'm happy to report that the small plant pulled through and it's looking good showing no signs of FMV this spring.

violette des soliÃĩs_Maio_2017.JPG

The problem is, when looking at the leaves they seem different from Frank's plant. His plant has 5 lobed leaves and mine has 3 lobed leaves. Nevertheless, looking in the web i found several plants of Violette de Solliès that, apparently, have the two kinds of leaves.

violette des soliÃĩs_Maio_2017.JPG

Also, in the french video, some of the Violette de Solliès trees seem to have some of these 3 lobed leaves, similar to my plant (sorry for the bad quality capture from the video)

I would appreciate if someone can confirm that this variety has these 2 types of leaves as i don't think it will be this year that i can confirm the variety by their fruits.

Edit - I haven't noticed another recent thread on this fig, with pictures of some trees and some of the leaves are very similar to those in my tree, like this one from Sas - https://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/show_single_post?pid=1295738537&postcount=26&forum=0

So, i guess i will have to wait for a few figs to confirm the variety.

Eli,

Sorry. I have missed your post. Regarding the Adler plant i have, this year it has some brebas, so i don't think its the same as VDS, which, according to Baud, is a one crop variety.

Hi Jamie,

Here are some leaf photo's of this years cuttings from Saxonfig.
I've 4 of them and leaf is all over the place at this stage.
These have been very vigorous for me but it doesn't look
as they'll set fruit this year.

IN EDIT,this first photo is not VdS,but a Vasilika Sika.Sorry for any confusion.

Thanks, Paul.

Although it was rooted last year, my VDS had such a severe case of FMV that almost didn't make it so, in reality, this is really its first year of real growth. So i think its normal that the definitive leave shapes are not fully defined yet, like your cuttings.
I have the impression that the new leaves that are coming in my tree will be 5 lobbed one's, like your young ones.

Will have to wait a bit more to confirm.

Thanks again,
