Wellspring figs

My order showed up today from wellspring, and honestly I'm completely happy with what I got.
I'll post some individual pictures from close up in just a bit.

I lost an auction on eBay for a fig that went well over $100 I was planning on spending around $90, when I lost the auction I found one of wellsprings figs for $6.99 then realized they have many different varieties I want plus many other cool plants I want as well, so I spent less than what I would have paid for one and got six figs I was looking for and two acerola cherry for $70 with shipping.
Getting my order today was very satisfying, I give them two thumbs up πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌ

Nice score.

I bought a fig from Wellspring a few years ago. They are tissue cultured plants, so expect that it will take 2-3 years before they produce a crop

They may be tiny but they are healthy. Fig lovers are nothing if not patient.

Got you some good ones! They are what they are on their labels! They look very Healthy! Good Luck!

I also purchased a few plants a couple months ago and they are starting to put some growth on now.

I ordered two fig varieties from them this March, which is kind of tiny just like yours.  Now they are about 20" tall and healthy.  No complaint here.

Anyone know why tissue culture plants take 2-3 years to fruit? I hope it doesn't take that long lol

Just look at the size of your trees...I'd say longer than that, depending on the varieties.

i have purchased trees 3 diff times, well satisfied ,tiny little tissue culture plants ,but wow they grow up fast.good place for good trees ,very good prices i give them two thumbs up or 5 stars.

I too have purchased from them and all at 3 years old are doing well, I even have a few figs on a VDB and Hardy Chicago this year. Hirts also has nice little TC figs that have done well for me. The only problem with TC plants is the tend to be multi branched. To aid in storage over winter I like my potted figs to be a single stem branching at about 4 feet so pruning is required. Cuttings tend to be single branched or double.

I am not quite sure that TC fig trees tend to be multi branched more so than the other methods...It is more like,  if you let it, so be it...

The pictures in the second post look like they might have stuck more than one thin cutting in the pot (in re the multi branched comment).

My experience with these guys is pretty negative.
Since they started I've ordered both from them and one of their other sites (too lazy to look up).
Most figs came healthy but were not very impressive and I was not thrilled with the growth rate. Many put out nothing but suckers. 2 were mislabeled.
My last order had 2 dead orchid plants and their reaction to my complaint was to block me from ever ordering from them.
I never heard from them nor did I ever get any money back. EBay did nothing.
My 2 cents = steer clear.
Any grower who treats customers with hostility should not be encouraged.

I was not very happy with my 2 figs I bought from them, tooth pick size stems and one or 2 leaves. Both are barely moving its 2 months now.

Did you repot right away, or ever? I'm getting ready to repot with sunshine #4 and a mild fertilizer.
How do they look, and what kind did you get?

Interesting point! I'm going to check for that when I repot it.

One of the effects of the hormones used in tissue culture induces all those 'suckers'. That's how to make many plants, quickly, with a small amount of material from the mother plant.   Usually, but not always, by the time they are ready to place in actual soil and harden off to survive on their own, that hormone should have run its course.

No I never repotted, I dont see much roots yet pushing to the out side of the 2-1/2in.soil square.
I bought a Desert King, and a Violette du Bordeaux. The VdB is looking better then the king.
I have been hitting them with 1/2 strength Miracle Grow every week.

Would I be better up sizing the pot?

I would up-size the pot.  The pots are way too small in my opinion.  They may be fine for shipping purpose, but not for plants in the hot days outside.  I actually put mine in a 3 gal containers which are what came in handy at the time.  Now they are very healthy and grow very fast, with fertilizer.  I actually pinched the tips two weeks ago to promote more branches.

I have 6 trees from them and overall I have to say I'm disappointed. 3 of them are going into their 3rd grow season and no sign of figs yet, the other 3 are going into their second year and are still under achievers.

I bought an LSU purple from a forum member through eBay last spring and was disappointed in its size, but this year it took off and already has 7 figs.  I bought a tree from Harvy C last spring and it easily tripled in size and already has figs coming in.

Personally I would not buy  tissue culture trees again.

AltaFarm , "Personally I would not buy tissue culture trees again."

I have to agree !!

I can understand your feeling... Mine did not take off for over one months and by early May, suddenly they took off.  Now they are 20" tall and new branches coming out from where I pinched two weeks ago.  But I did put them in large pots, and then are under full sun with some fertilizer and water.  By the way, maybe the fig variety play some role in this as well.  Mine are Desert King and Olympian if that helps.

Most of you guys are new here.  There are some threads started on these plants.   Wellspring offer tissue cultured plants.  Don't start celetrating yet!  There plants are dirt cheap and it MAY take you many years before you see one fig.  They sucker like crazy and their growth is super and pretty.  But to me, they're not worth my time.  Good luck with them!
