Where should you place your five gallon fig tree

Some of my fig trees get attacked during dormancy and all my trees are not protected during winter.
Here are few photos (taken today) of a couple two to three year old fig plants making their way back and need repotting. Left unattended and in full sun in Texas, overall results have been disappointing in the five gallon pots so far.
The first one in photo was just repotted. You can see how the whole tree was lost this past winter.
The best results in five to seven gallon pots are when in morning sun and avoiding direct afternoon sun. I must add that in TX we have plenty of heat which might not be beneficial for fruiting in small pots.
Having the pot in shade (away from direct sun) and the plant in sun also works well.

The first two photos are of the Bourjasotte Grise, next is St Jean and the last one is Aked.

Next are some photos of some of my performing Figs in SIP pots also taken today (about Seven gallons). Is it the pot, age, location or variety that makes a difference? I would say all, but most of what you see are of the same age of what you saw above, which leads me to conclude that where you place your pot around the house will have a great impact on your final results.

Micro climates make all the difference in the world.Everyone has them,it's just a
matter of finding them. The southern walls of my house are my friend during the winter..
They're a death zone in the summer. The same with south facing block walls. It's not
uncommon to string together 2 weeks of 90F + with no humidity here.I have to shade
my pots on the south and west side about now.As long as they're well hydrated they can
stand up to 100F.I pull the sunscreen, they roast.

Paul, Where do you get that material from? Thank You.

Aren't you at some altitude like 4000 ft or something like that?  Does the lack of humidity at altitude factor into the equation?  Don't know if I am remembering correct or not.  I get our Texas members mixed up, LOL

Yeah I second with the question on what that material is. It's already getting hot here

These are car sun shades from the dollar store. They can be cut to
provide coverage for #15's with the smaller remnant good for #1's-#5's.
Just run some duct tape on the cut end.I get 3-4 years out of them.

Tyro have you checked soil temp before and after? I am just curious what the effect is.

I buried 3/4 deep, my 15 gal. pots into soil. I think it will be sufficient for 100 plus days. If not, I'll be buying fig newtons this winter.  :)

I think in ground pots keep cool with the earth. I have measured my cuttings at around 119

The extent of my monitoring has been to place my hand on the pot when exposed to full sun
and when shaded via these sun screens.I'd need a compost thermometer to get an actual reading
at depth,I don't have one.If you use one of these in SoCa your vehicle still has a dash,if not?

Paul,
Thanks for posting your sun shades! I was thinking about having to buy something to shade mine when I transfer it to full sun. I'm still new at this. I still have my new pots in filtered sun. I still need to do research on potted figs. What is the temp suppose to be in the pot at the hottest? And the same with a water/wet gauge of the soil. People talk about getting the gauges but I don't have any clue what the ideal wet or heat is. I have been just sticking my fingers deep in the pot so far. :( My plants look good but I'm like a little kid running to look under the Christmas tree every day! lol   IMG_8703.jpg
