The Greek owner said many years ago, his friend from Madeira Islands gave him a few green fig trees. His trees are very old. This is White Madeira No. 1. These figs were extremely sweet, jammy like dried date fruits and with a sweet, ripened strawberry flavor. They had crunchy pulps and also little crunchy on the skins. The taste and textures were extremely good and they were a little sweeter than the sweetest Smith figs that I had eaten so far. The leaves and fruits are similar to my Black Madeira. Best, Tam

I have started to eat the main crops since August 15. The breba crops were the same, but larger in size and also had excellent taste. Best, Tam

Tam, Thanks for posting the pictures and commentary. That looks like a healthy productive tree. And the figs look tasty. How large or small are the eyes when they ripen? Thanks.

Pete: They have medium open eyes on the skins only, but not through the pulps. We had a lot rain here during spring and summer. A few ripened figs had closed eyes. The breba crops had closed eyes. Best, Tam

When I have a time, I will post a few more different White Madeira trees (they have different taste and variation in leave shapes) . All of them taste excellent. One of them had a complex taste and a nice, spicy flavor. After eating these ripened figs, my mouth had a sensation for a few hours. Best, Tam

Tam, it is interesting how the leaves and shape of the fruit is very similar to Black Madeira except that it is a green fig rather than a dark fig. Does the Greek gentleman have his tree growing in-ground in the Wash. DC area? Or is it in a container? I'm wondering how cold hardy it is. Thanks for posting.

Thank you for watching my photos. White Madeira No. 1 still has excellent in taste even though we had a lot of rain here in the spring and summer. White Madeira No. 1 is more superb than the following figs that I have been eating this year so far: Hardy Chicago, Hunt, LSU Scott's Black, Marseilles VS Black, Smith, Negretta, Chris Black, Paradiso, Peter's Honey, Ronde de Bordeaux, Sal's EL, Sicilian Black, Violette de Bordeaux (Negronne), White Marseilles, Portuguese Celeste , Petit Negri, Atreano RR, English Brown Turkey, Brunswick, Filacciano, Grantham's Royal and Black Mission. Hello Tam, Your fig could well be one of the best Common, small Portuguese white figs, still cultivate by old connoisseurs in Madeira as well as in continental Portugal. Bears the name of 'BACORINHO' in both regions. May I invite my good friend Nelson to verify this... He may already have in his rich collection at least one Bacorinho. I have two small trees rooted this Spring but no figs yet. It is a delicious fig with a red pulp with purplish tones. If I find pictures , will post them. Francisco

Francisco you beat me, I was just going to say just that this fig is more than likely Bacorinho and I had my cousin driving around madeira Island for 2 years to find one. He sent me 2 cuttings but unfortunately both eventually died. Bacorinho is a very rare fig in Madeira today sadly, considering they are probably the best white figs on the island. I will try to get new cuttings next year of the bacorinho and hopefully locate an Anjinho fig tree while im at it.

Francisco: Thank you for your photos. Bacorinho figs have purplish red pulps. Skin on Bacorinho figs are thicker and more round at the base. The necks are more shorter. Do you have pictures of the leaves. Best, Tam

Francisco the pics you posted look more like the bacorinho as I remember been a long time since I ate them atleast 23-24 years but I remember it having a short neck and red pulp. Also makes an early breba that is very good flavored.
Tam it's a strawberry type fig, the closest fig I had to date even leaf was very close from what I remember was strawberry fig from almostedenplants I lost that plant over winter and definately want a replacement.

Well it is an amazing looking fig, I like the looks of the leaves too and find many excellent tasting figs have this plainer looking leaf. I'd be willing to trade cuttings of just about any fig I have for this one.

Tam, I am not keen on these sort of descriptions, although I can distinguish between several cultivars where the best fruits are. On the other hand my ideal ripeness gauge for tasting figs is probably not similar to yours, once I do not let the fruit go over-ripe for the effect of tasting. For me, the moment to taste a fig is right under the tree, early morning, minutes after sunrise, select the one with soft but firm body, some skin cracks already evident, may be a tear on the eye, the fruit starting to bend on its foot... From what I recall, Bacorinho is a sweet, fruity and flavor rich fig, aromatic , leaving a lasting souvenir on your palate. Long ago it was a must in every orchard or backyard... now very difficult to find Francisco

Francisco: Thank you for your information. So, you think White Madeira No. 1 is 100% Bacorinho? Nelson: I have the Strawberry tree from Almost Eden Nursery. The leaves and fruits are not the same. The fruits on Strawberry have shorter necks and long stems vs White Madeira No.1 has longer necks and the very little to no stems. Strawberry's pulps are purplish red and the skins have a little light purple. Thank you. Best, Tam

Hi Tam, I got a promise for one or two (late) , end of season Bacorinhos . Hope they will get ripe before the rain coming stronger..(already started), will then get additional pictures of fruit and leaves. The purplish hue on the pulp color, according to a friend, comes from the caprification process. The standard pulp color is exactly as shown on those Tam's excellent pictures. Nelson, from local contacts there has been not many Bacorinho brebas. The trees are small, about 6' high, same on round. It's somehow a delicate small tree. I bought two rooted trees earlier this year and they seem to be OK. I have to wait for the first fruit to be sure of what they are....the nursery 'surprises'. There is another fig called Bacorinha, (feminine word) also a Common . It's a totally different fig, yellow skin and amber pulp... and One more variant, dark green skin, with carmine pulp very similar in shape to Bacorinho and BM, called 'de Pé Comprido' ... translates to ... ´Long Foot' . Have a promise for a couple of rooted trees next year. Francisco
