Whole Foods figs

I stopped by Whole Foods near work in Manhattan yesterday. They have fresh figs and fig trees for sale. Chicago Hardy, Celeste, Italian Honey, and one other, can't remember. All were in great shape. $14.99.

Arne- thats very cool. I'll be visiting fam on saturday in the city. Which whole foods? how big were the trees and were those 14.99 or the figs were 14.99? Thanks for the details!

14.99 for the trees. The figs were 3.99/pint? The figs are Black Mission and in very good shape. The Italian Honey was about 2 feet tall, but I'd say they were all at least 1 foot tall.

This was at the WF on 57 b/w 2nd and 3rd. I'm pretty sure most WF will have them - they did last year as well. So if there's one closer, you may want to try there first. I know they had them in NJ WF last year, near where I live.

Be careful, I purchased an LSU Purple from a WF in Southeast PA.  After 1+ years growth, I have determined that instead of an LSU Purple, I actually have a Celeste.
Been dropping fruit like crazy for the past month.  Still a nice tree, but I would have never paid for it since I knew about the fruit dropping issues.  Could have been
a tag that was swapped by customers, or by the hired help.  Either way, I didn't get what I had hoped for or paid for.  YMMV...

Our Whole Foods in Pasadena had a beautiful display of fresh figs on a center table in produce arranged in the shape of a fig. There were three circles of figs: a black outer one, a brown inner one, and a green/yellow center one. I've been disappointed in the flavor of their figs compared to the fresh ones off my trees, so didn't buy any. But it sure looked pretty.

I have had great luck with WF figs.  I have 3 trees now about 4 1/2 ft tall (in pots) each with 100 to 120 figs on them.  Celeste (very good) BT and RdB.  They are still available in WF in norther NJ.

Arne, will they still be selling them sometimes in April to May next year? I hope to attend my daughter's graduation during that time.

Njfred: Can you tell me which WF in Jersey had the trees. I don't live far from West Orange WF but my work takes me all over the northern part of the state.

Fignatic... The WF in Madison, NJ.  FYI, there were still some there on Friday

I've only seen them in August/September. They're common varieties, but in good shape.

I picked up a Black Spanish from my local Whole Foods in Westport CT for $14.99. Its about 2 ft tall with 2 trunks maybe 1/2 in diameter. The leaves look just all the ones on my 3 year old Vdb. It was planted in almost pure compost and wood chips, very compacted for my taste. I partially root pruned it and potted it up to a 3 gallon pot in a better draining lighter soil and parked her in the shade. So far so good. There are more is anyone wants to know or just pm me and I'll check for you.

I'm still learning how to take pictures with my cheapo cell phone, so it's a little fuzzy. Sorry.

Was at Whole Foods in Austin yesterday.
I bought some Black Mission and some Brown Turkey. Loved the BM. Don't bother with the BT
