Wine Chiller Grow Room

Last year I had mixed results with my first attempt at "rooting" aside from just sticking a branch in the ground.

This year I decided I was going to convert my wine chiller into a mini grow room. The wine chiller was no longer functional since it was hit with saltwater after Sandy, it just was a place to keep my wine bottles.

This has great insulation, door seals tight and thought it would be perfect so I went for it.

Less than two weeks and I am seeing growth on two clippings. I am kind of nervous as we are only in December, I hope these don't get to big?!

My question to the experts, when must I break out my growing lights?

Of to a good start. What type of grow lights are you using?

I purchased a single led grow lamp, I think it is like 13 watts, I guess when it grows a little more, I will set up the light

Hi PeterC,
As soon as the buds start breaking, they need light.
If you wait all you'll get is leggy growth ... and that's not good.

Thanks Jdsfrance,  you think 15 hours on is acceptable?

Peter, that is a great idea!  My wine cooler died last summer because it was cheap and when it died it took much of my wine collection with it.  Its just been sitting as I try to find the time to get it to the dump and recycle it. Maybe my wife will let me reuse it.

This thing holds humidity, with a small container of water at the bottom, she is at 60%,  the temp stays steady at 77

I will post some photos of light set up

Hi PEterC,

15 hours on will do .

thanks jdsfrance, one last question, if the fig plant gets too big for this unit, I would have to clip it until late Spring?

about two weeks, all have roots but one

Looking good Peter. The more challenging part awaits you. Keeping that guy growing for the next 5 months before he goes into the real world
I learned my lesson as a young fig enthusiast.
Better to wait
Good Luck!

Coop, if artificial lighting is used the fig will grow until spring.
I started Nov 11 with dormant trees and no leaves.
Now I have leafed out growing figs.

Nice setup Doug. Yes, there is no question that figs can grow through the use of artificial lighting, I have done this in the past for many years.  It just takes lots of babying. I just like to wait until its closer to the time when I can put them out.
Good luck guys, your figs are all looking nice

Thanks Coop,Doug has an awesome set up.

I think the more concern for me is my container figs that are in my garage not waking up. Just checked on them and it is 50 degrees in there!  never in a million years would I have thought that one day I would be shuffling large fig containers like this :O

How do your figs like the purple light from the led. My figs didn't like the purple light from my cob led.

I think its just enough to keep them going until Spring, I accidentally burned a few leaves as they got to close to my 25w bulb. I just recently introduced them to a screened window with 3 hours of sun and they are doing ok.

Sometimes i find leaves that fell off, I guess without natural sun, these things can not thrive to well. They also seem to like being sprayed with diluted miracle-grow

Keep an eye on those garage figs Peter, one of mine woke up last week and is now pushing leaves on 20+ buds.  I have 5 or 6 others that are getting ready to bud out and one starting to produce a breba.  My cold storage is 45-55°F but most often 50-55°F, warmer than optimal but that cannot be helped.  So the warm grow room is going to be very crowded before long and I suspect I will be buying a new light before long.

Strong work!  I wouldn't fertilize as that makes them get bigger, faster.  Eventually 3 hours of sun won't be enough.

My biggest fear DevIsgro, my garage is about 50 now and we are still some time away before the move outside.

Thanks rantor, yeah I am holding off on the fertilizer, do you think I should add some for good root growth or should I just skip it all until they are outside?

Buy yourself some grow lights and put them up right in the garage if necessary I suppose.  I assume your wife would prefer that to the living room
