WTF?!? CdDG airlayers removed!

Theses air layers came off the same tree, at the same time, with the same amount of root growth, look at the difference!
One has so much explosive growth it's not funny, the other had good growth, and the 3rd lost all its leaves and is struggling bad???? So strange!

I have had them do this also, but they bounced back, give it time, sometimes it takes a long time,

Did you put it in full sun after you removed the air layers? I have seen that be the cause before. You can also verbally assault it. The only thing stronger than a figs ability to photosynthesis is it's sense of irony.

Some air layers will out grow mother tree. ( if mother tree is a potted small tree ) i have see this quite often in my yard

It seems to me that this is no different from starting cuttings from the same tree and finding that some grow much more vigorously than others. I can't prove it with scientific explanation, but over the years,I have become convinced that some shoots simply have more stored energy than others. I once read somewhere that upright growing shoots were preferred  over outward growing ones with respect to vigor. No doubt some will refute this, but based upon what I have experienced and observed, I am inclined to believe it.

I'm sure it depends on the variety, but I picked up two Little Miss Figgies this year that haven't really established a main upward shoot, but are growing in all directions at once (from what I've read here, this is consistent with the behavior of tissue cultured plants).  I've already taken two air layers from the larger one, and tonight I had to remove a third.  This was a horizontal branch extending well beyond the side of the pot, and the cup was taped to the side of it.  I set the layer on 7/22, and just realized I don't have any pics of it attached, but here it is now:
