I really wasn't expecting snow in NJ tonight! I guess I wasn't paying attention to the forecast. It sure looks nice on this almost-ready-to-eat late-season Brown Turkey, though. I've been lucky so far -- we've had frost in other parts of NJ a few times, but not quite yet in my area. We've been skirting around the 33/34 degrees F level a couple of times. We're expecting more of a hard freeze early next week, so I guess I'll be prepping my storage area over the weekend. I brought a handful of trees with nearly-ripe figs in overnight. All the other ones got snowed on. Frank, the pictures were taken with a run-of-the-mill Olympus digital camera that is a few years old. Nothing special. It does have Macro and SuperMacro settings, though. I use the Macro mode for relative closeups such as this. I use the fixed-zoom SuperMacro when I'm taking closeups of juicy figs. Tonight they say it will be 28F in Fair Lawn and tomorrow it will be 30. Next week the low will be 24f so the Fig Farm is going into hibernation for the winter Sunday. Most of the leaves have yellowed and maybe 30% have fallen off as of tonight.

It is possible that Calvin meant +14F (-10C ) because it is too early to reach as low as -14F (-25C). Just my opinion from Zone 5. __________________ Ottawan-Z5a, Canada

Hey brothers and sisters . All my potted trees safely in the garage and although there s no snow in GA it is still going to drop to the 20s here in Loganville. my innground are in for the first shock of the year. hang in there guys! Hey Joe, we re only like a half hour away. I hope we can do some trading in the future! Jim, I apologize, I didn't mean to take away from the great pics. I'm probably just shell shocked and wishing that's what we would have got. Ottawan, nope no mistake. We had an arctic blast that came straight down from the north across Saskatchewan, Montana, Wyoming, and then us. It was -9 at 2AM when I decided to move all my trees and plants that still have leaves from the sun room to the house, the weather man said it got down to -14F at 4AM. We were having one of the best mellow falls, until 3 days ago. We have had plenty of night time freezes but that was it. I don't think I'll be getting my garlic in the ground either. I always get it in a little late, but we have never had frozen ground before Thanksgiving. Last nights temps froze my 5 gallon's soil and now I can knock the leaves off the trees just by touching them. Today I need to rearrange the garage.

My pots were a little frozen too, They are all in the garage now. I thought I cut back on a lot of trees, but my garage looks as full as ever. Not good when I need to move these somewhere else in two months.... __________________ NJ z7a Wish list :

Extra cold surprised the weatherfolks here too in zone 6b West Virginia as temps plunged nearly 10 degrees colder than expected, into the teens, and more soon to come. Records they are a breaking. The report below records the -14F in Denver on Thursday, and far colder nearby, -27F in Casper Wyoming, -21F in Livingston Montana. My final two trees made it into the garage tonight at the last minute. Heavy rain coming tomorrow and temps dropping to 19 here in Northern in New Jersey on Tuesday night. Needed to move them before they became soaked and heavy. Ready for the winter. I'll trim the last two a bit and save the branches to root them late winter in time for the Spring sun. __________________ NJ Zone 6a

Rich...winter is a coming fast. Brought my hibiscus in two weeks ago and a little avocado that sprouted in the compost pile over the summer. This guy is an experiment. Remember growing them as kids. Sticking toothpicks into the pit to dangle the fat part of the pit into a glass with water to sprout the pit. I've got a nice big set of large windows facing the south so it will get a fair amount of sun. __________________ NJ Zone 6a

I ran out of time to protect all my in-ground trees unfortunately. I got about half of them done. Tonight it will be a breezy low of 23F and tomorrow night it will be 19F. The ones that didn't get protected are Mt. Etna types, Malta Black, Zingarella, and Sicilian Red. They very recently lost all their leaves but my concern is that they aren't fully dormant yet and more likely to be damaged. Time will tell. __________________ Steve MD zone 7a

Dennis, we are having the same record lows around here as well. Overwintering figs is a real challenge in our zone 6a so growing in pots for a few years is about the only way to make it work. Sure gets tiring dragging pots in and out of the garage during the transition from fall to winter. Good luck with your figs brother. __________________ No, your other left! Good evening fellas! I left the house for work at 5 AM this morning and the temp gage in my truck showed 14F or -10 C! I thought the darn thing was broken but my porch thermometer showed the exact same reading and mind you I leave a half an hour east of Atlanta!!!!! Thank God I covered the little ones yesterday. Night time lows will be in the low 20s to mid twenties for the rest of the week and highs in the upper 30s and low 40's. Monday 64f !!!i in Fair Lawn NJ.
