Zida Fig Tree Got one today..

This morning Got One Zida fig tree, I had a look in the past threads and also some pictures posted by John. Anyone growing this variety? any personal experience will be a great help for me. Also as I understand this is a Symrna type fig and needs Capri fig to pollinate. Thanks in advance, cheers guys..

I also have one in Sydney but a lot off the figs drop cause Capri crop later also my Spanish dessert, and a few Turkish fig trees have the same problem maybe u will have more luck in South Austraila if u live close to the fig farms.

It may be a Zidi fig tree.(not Zida).

Yes it is Zidi maybe people spell it Zida its the same tree i can see from the leaves good luck anyway i have two figs left on my tree if the fruit sets ill post some pics.

mocatta i do have a Capri fig so hopefully it will set fruit.  It will be interesting next year.

I've heard some say that they've had Zidi set fruit without caprification (not sure if that's spelled right). It seems to be semi-persistant without the wasp. I have one small tree that hasn't set any yet.

Here's an interesting thread about Zidi: http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/Possible-Zidi-breaking-news-5945663

I have a Zidi and it does not fruit in my zone (Florida). It needs the fig wasp! Might be good as a collection or as shade tree.

I have zidi and this past year on a yearling tree, 4 fruits were produced. 2 matured enough to eat but they lacked the darker center of a fully caprified fruit. Later in the season the other two fell before they ripened. In the past I've read about zidi occasionally producing figs to maturity without the wasp. We'll see what happens next summer when the tree is another year older.

Thanks everyone for sharing their experience. I will find out next year how does it go. also try to get some more capri fig for pollination. Cheers and happy new year.

kausikck76,

It's good to bring caprifigs close to your Zidi but, remember that these wild (male) figs must contain wasps. Otherwise they shall have to be previously caprificated, i.e., to grow in a wasp environment for at least one full season.
See above link, old newspaper article about the dry fig industry in Western Australia. At that time there were plenty of active (live) caprifigs over there... may be some still left ?!

Hi kausikck76

Wonder if you ever managed to bring 'edible life' to your Zidi figs..
Also noticed that your neighbors,  the Willabrand fig farm - http://www.freshfigs.com.au/ - had a record number of visitors this season and they carry excellent varieties, notably a cousin of Zidi (?)
Have you visited this place ?

Hello FigAlot ,
Congratulations!
Thanks for sharing the Zidi fig pictures
These are very good news. With the pollinator at your door step and active as it shows, you shall be able to do numerous experimentations and 'play'  with all types of figs.. I wonder if you grow other Smyrna varieties as well as San Pedro..
It's fine to have the Caprifigs not exactly on your yard . This helps to trim the amount of insects getting to pollinate your figs.
If they are plenty and too close, they may over pollinate and create some damaging. But it's recommendable to be aware of the area/place these Caprifigs grow... On some years Profichis may be in short supply and if you have to ripen your Smyrnas and Smyrnoids  you shall have to get there and pick a few to bring close to your trees.
Are you also growing Spanish Dessert ? If you have some pictures please let's have a look.
There was recent talk on the forum regarding Kalamata white (Greek) which is believed to be a Smyrna..
Good Luck

FigAlot,

Thank you for those DK pictures and again .. Congratulations!
Very few people in this forum have shown pictures of properly ripen (pollinated)  DK main crop fruit.

DK is a San Pedro type fig - a 1st crop of parthenocarpic brebas (no pollination) and a main crop requiring pollination

Your Zidi is a Smyrna type - always requiring pollination to ripen
I know that in Australia you have a variety also called Smyrna . It could well be the Calimyrna fig variety, another Smyrna type

This document is good reading on figs in Australia with full descriptions of all types.

Thanks Lampo,
I know the other varieties but Im going to stick to these two for now as I am very happy with them, by the way both growing in 75 litre pots not sure what in gallons probably 20
I have seen the article but thats more for New South Wales which they have a different climate to Adelaide. But still applies most of Australia.
