Dan, Is the leaf shown for O'Rourke in the press release the same as your O'Rourke's leaves?
I got one from Mr. Robin with a completely different leaf than the one shown.  Nobody I've communicated with seemd to have a leaf that matches the LSU picture.

I hope to be able to post pictures of the O'Rourke Improved Celeste leafs by the middle of Sept.
Time will tell.

When I bought my Improved Celeste I thought it was the one named O'Rourke, that they were one and the same. Seems like I have just an IC and not the O'R. Does anyone sell the O'R with the leaves as shown in the pictures in Dan's link? Does anyone have comparison data on the two different figs? I wouldn't mind growing them side by side to see and compare.

I am also interested in a true O'Rourke are there any sources out there. I read that they were going to be available to a few select nurseries has that taken place yet. If there are any forum members willing I will gladly pay. Please pm me

Given the confusion among fig varieties, I shouldn't be surprised that there are multiple versions of the LSU figs around.  But I am.  It makes sense, though - these figs went out the back door of LSU and were passed around.  There is no way to know if they are really even the same figs that were in the program.  It is so easy to make mistakes with cuttings.
Everyone else that I've asked about O'Rourke seems to have a leaf that does not match the LSU press release.  I don't know of any commercial sources for the O'Rourke LSU pictured.  I had gotten some cuttings this year, that had been taken directly from LSU, but they didn't make it - I lost them all before they leafed out.
This is the leaf from the plant Mr. Robin has.  It is very different from the LSU photo.

My plants haven't produced yet.

fignut,
I too just got a new (O'R) from JR and so-far the leaf looks
like a typical Celeste - not (O'R); most probably another good
IC from O'R's Celeste breeding program.

Dan do you know of any commercial sellers of a true O'Rourke or if LSU has a program for obtaining cuttings like UC Davis.

"There have been very few new releases of named fig

varieties from a public breeding program in the past fifty years. One of the largest

benefactors of a new fig release will be tree nurseries in supplying trees to homeowners

and hobbyist."
Again I am confused. This is a quote from the LSU release what exactly does that mean?
Did they or didn't they make these varieties available to nurseries and who has a true O'Rourke other than LSU?
2007 You would think it would be being marketed by now true to cultivator.

I do not seek the LSU figs of any sorts but perhaps if one was interested in what was released or not released or any future releses couldn't they somehow contact someone from there that has the information to talk directly too?
Just a thought not sure if that would work or not.

Martin as I am new to fig growing this is very confusing I also read posts about Sal's fig which I still can't fig-ur out. I see some sellers list that they have an I/C or even list it as an O'Rourke, same with the Sal's. I guess what I'm trying to say is I would like to get what I'm paying for and also don't want to put the time and effort into something and later find out I was duped I'm sure you can relate. Also when my trees get large enough I would be interested in trading or  what I give away I would like to have proper labeling. I would hate for someone to come back and say this isn't what I traded for.

Sal,
yes it happens often , i got duped indeed. There are different sals from the now closed Belleclare Nursery i believe 2 types and one from Edible Landscaping and perhaps others called sals. Many members have 1 or more what they call unknowns or mislabeled  i have 1 unknown out of 15 total types.  It can be frustrating to purchase something other than what you truly wanted. Luckily im done with what i have wanted unless there is one out there that grows money or i get rid of one because of taste or lack of production then i might seek another type.  ; )

I got a Celeste from Texas that has the same pointy leaves that the O'Rourke has. No fruit on the tree yet.

Dan

So how do they 'officially' release them?  Just commercially?

Good question Jackster,

I have literally spent hours searching the web for that answer.

Here is an article about Ed O'rourke and how fig received his name, the article is 4 paragraphs down the page. Interesting to read i think for those whose interest are in Lsu program.
It only a few paragraphs long .

Thanks Cecil!  Yeap that the true O'Rourke!  that's the one I am seeking.  I need to go check my trees again....I thought I saw one of those up on the hill under my Deanna fig tree.

Dennis,

Back in better days Dan Abadie picked this plant for me, But sadly I managed to kill it along with another one.

EDIT...I know how I killed that plant so you can bet I won't be doing that anymore!

I am NOT saying ALL of James Robbin's O'Rourke plants look like this one did!
