If you don't like spam emails, I would highly recommend that anyone posting their email address in this thread uses the "edit" feature to update your post and remove the email address.

Just like Google has crawlers (spiders) to seek out content on webpages, really bad people have crawlers that hunt for emails on webpages.  They're grabbing your emails as I type, and adding you to a list of emails to spam.

Believe me, knowing this stuff is part of my profession.  =)

Afishpond now thats not nice saying to another member he may be full of do do.
No member wants another member to stop posting on a post we are all here trying to help each other and have a good time.

Helping each other is a big part and thats what the man was trying to do  - help you out.
Computers is not my specialty but every member is unique and many know things that others are not familar with.

He knows about computers and i feel you owe him an apology in my opinion.

afishpond,

I think you took Jason's comments completely wrong. He wasn't necassarily making a personal stab at you.

These web crawlers are set up by big companies like Google (as well as others) to automatically "crawl" various webpages/adresses to gather information, usually for advertising purposes. And yes, that "advertising" quite often includes uninvited spam e-mails.

Also, this doesn't necassarily make these "crawlers" something evil. Just an aggressive form of gathering info with the intent of sending topic specific spam to your e-mail address or similar. That is unless someone is collecting your address in order to send you a virus. Now that I would consider malicious.

I don't claim to know all the details on this stuff and you most likely know alot more than I do Jason. So am I wrong or missing some details on some of this stuff??

Hey afishpond ,
Jason always tries to help and gave some good info.
You can make this right and straighten this out with a quick apology.
No question you should.

I just read all your 10 posts so far on the F4F. This should have been enough to realize that the members are almost like a close-knit community but always very happily open to new comers. Most disagree with each other but with respect. This was not evident from your post here when responding to satellitehead. It was so different in tone from your post starting the thread. There are ways to mend the situation here and I hope you know how.

Andy, please apologize to Jason for your rude comment. He is a stand-up guy and was only trying to inform us. Anyway, I think he was tactfully trying to warn me about the link I posted for you to check out. He is right and I made the correction. --Ruben

Andy,

Seems you took Jasons comments/advice way out of context.
Your actions were totally unacceptable!

Though it may take a big man to behave the way you did, but it takes a much bigger man to make an apology.

I saw nothing what Jason wrote that warranted you to send such a  harsh response. You have displayed your true colors my friend and they are not bright colors.

I consider Jason a great friend and an asset to this great fig community.
He offers his expertise and asks for nothing in return. Never ever!

As I have many Many time before with other members, I could've offered you more cuttings then you could've ever imagined and not even ask you to pay a dime.
But you let your emotions get the best of you.

Maybe sometime in the future when you are more capable of controlling your tempter we would invite you to ask for help and might respond to you with open arms.

Right now you just might have shot yourself in the foot.

Take care of yourself and good luck with you!
Hope the future gets brighter for you.

Andy,
You misunderstood his post. When he said "really bad people..." he was not talking about you. He meant people who use web crawlers to generate mailing lists for spam. Since you are not one of those, he did not mean you or any member of the forum. He was just warning against posting our email addresses on any of these threads since they are open to the public. No one (not even you) has done that. I was the only one that posted a link to my GW profile. So he was actually talking to me but worded it so everyone would be careful. Hope this clears up the confusion.

I would an attitude if I had to swollow one too!

If it makes anyone feel better, I am just now seeing this and I didn't see the comments that made everyone so mad.

Therefore, I am not mad.

For anyone who needs to know, like a couple of other folks at this forum, my profession - my life love - revolves around computer security and internet security.  I know it's hard for some to wrap their head around what I do, but I basically spend my life trying to keep people from hacking the network of the company I work for .... and I not only investigate how people hack computers and information, but also how computers are exploited, allowing rogue entities to steal your information.

It is for this reason that I bother to share any information with people.  I do this on a couple of forums I participate in because (I give a damn).

I hope that someone learns from the things I post.  Folks constantly blame about spam emails ... I'm telling you how spammers get your email address.  Publicly posting it on a forum (where it can be read by anyone) and DHA attacks (Google for this) account for the vast majority of spam emails on the internet.  Lately, spammers have been finding other ways - hijacking internet email accounts (Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail) and all of you have probably experienced this, getting an email with bogus links from a friend or associate.

Anyway ...

Just want to say, don't care what was said....and I value everyone's contribution here at the forum.  If it was bad and looked pointed at me ... I don't care.  It's been edited now (apparently) so ... no hard feelings.

Now you're feeling it rafed:
"Fig and let fig"
"We're All Just Figging Around"
"Viva la Higo"
"Let Figdome Ring Man!"

A little over the top - maybe? But it's still all good material given the right context :) .
