I am so new to the fig world that I do not even know what type of fig this would be.  It is advertised as a fresh California fig.  They are being sold in 2# packages for $6.99...I bought 6 pounds.  They are somewhat sweet, crunchy little seeds, smooth, not mushy.    So, F4F members...which California fig is this?   I am guessing Black Mission...am I right?

It's California Brown Turkey. Blk Mission is smaller, pulp is strawberry/red colored and much sweeter.

No problem. You should add a Blk Mission to your collection if you don't have any. It's a very good tasting fig.

Never cooked them before (they don't make it to the kitchen). They taste great when fully ripped.

Trader Joe's is selling Kadota. Bought some, not bad for store bought but not good either. Cosco has BTs in the cold storage area. Small culls and hard as rock, yuck.

What store did you find them in Sara? I've never seen fresh figs sold anywhere down my way.

At this time of the year the Whole Foods Market at Birmingham has the fresh Blk. Mission, LSU Purple, Celeste and few others  for sale. They also have the dried Calimyrna and Blk Mission for sale, all year long.

Sara, you saved me from having to take pics and making a post asking what those green figs I just bought at Trader Joes were.  Hopefully tonight I will get to try one.   Last night did not get to try them, I made Pesto and took that and some fresh maters to my daughter's new condo to celebrate her birthday and do a few "daddy duties" with tools   Told her she's had enough birthdays - she's starting to make me and my wife old! 

Danged Navid, as much as I don't want to, I am now going to have to go to Whole Paycheck and check out the figs!  Wave at Vulcan (Mr. Moon over Homewood) for me.  Oh BTW eat me some Saws or Dreamland ribs. 

I'm with everyone else on the California BT - rather insipid tasting.

The ones I saw at  Costco were the same but were half ripe and starting to mold so I passed.  Once I started tasting the ripe off the tree figs I only really want to buy dried or calimyrna figs fresh.

@Bill...I grabbed these at Costco in Louisville.  All of them are quite ripe, and juicy thus far.  With all the horrible comments I read about this fig, I cannot wait until I get to taste something of better quality.  I plan on calling Whole Foods to see if they happen to have any in stock.

Thanks Sara. I think the nearest Costco to me is in Paducah (about an hour north).

Dreamland is only few blocks from my apartment in Birmingham. They have some great foods. Two weeks ago whole foods had the fresh Blk Mission and LSU Purple for sale. You can also check the Publix on Greenspring HW for some fresh figs, usually Calimyrna and California Brown Turkey.

Also, if you live in Bhm and willing to drive 45 minutes from the city, I can recommend you a place that sells them way cheaper/pound. They have over 10 varieties of fresh figs to chose from.

Tried one of the Trader Joes's Kadotas this morning - lets just say - I hope the rest of the big box is much better.  Nowhere close to ripe in my opinion.  Here's to hoping.  If not then in a pot with some sugar they go - preserves!

I knew I shouldn't have - but I did it anyways.  Every time I go I get frustrated - well, except when I go for Gelato.  Hoping for the golden pot at the end of the rainbow - I arrived early, expecting to just sashay in and find a beautiful, fresh unpicked over, display of various luscious and sublime fresh figs.  The plans was that after finally picking up my old decrepit body from the floor after swooning over the glorious sight of figs dripping honey ready- no begging me to take them home, I would expectantly put them in a bag, breathlessly run to the cashier to pay for them only to finally sink my teeth in them on the way back to the office - fig juice magnificently dripping down around the big corny smile, down my chin only to be deposited on my crisp starched shirt to be displayed as a trophy - a trophy of gustatorial pleasure,  The plan was perfection!  Executed perfectly - with the timing impeccable - traffic was down, found a parking space near the door, the day hadn't gotten real hot yet, just few Tad's and Muffy's around with their coiffed hair dragging along their 2 1/2 bratty and rude kids dressed in Diesel, but best of all I was taking a short break from the office.  HOWEVER  You'd think that at 55 years of age I'd know better, you'd think the hard edge of experience, the whip burns of real life would have caused my memory to be clearer!  But I am an inveterate, irreconcilable, hopelessly romantic optimist at times.  Reality slapping you on the face smarts.  I'm just not always smart enough to put 2 + 2 together and come up with four.  Did Whole Paycheck have any figs?  Anybody want to hazard a guess?:  Navid teased me with the mere mention of Whole Paycheck having fresh figs in flavors I have only dreamed about - well don't know if I've ever dreamed about them, but I have read about them on here!  With  licentious dreams shattered and splintered and thrown to the dogs, I consoled my epicurean  psyche with goat butter, fig and almond cake and some expensive (and aged) cheeses after passing up the morels and black truffles.  Thought a dry-aged rib eye would be a good enticement to a new unrealized fantasy world - but alas - they were out of them also!  With head hung low, back at work, sucking on some sugar free instant lemonade.
