Nice looking mission breba.When does your main crop mission usually ripen for you?Also is your mission a Monrovia one?Thanks Martin

yes Rob this is Monrovia Mission when i bought at a long established nursery the fella there was talkative and there was a group of trees all Missions with monrovia tags.
He said they recently arrived via truck and were grown in there Visalia California facility a 1000 acre field.
The tag mentioned that location as well.

Here is the final picture of fig .
It was a pleasure to eat.  ; )

As a note i try hard to take the pictures just the way my eyes see them to show what i am seeing in my yard.

The figs exterior turned nice and dark.
Weight was 55 grams.

Thanks Martin for sharing.I had no brebas this year but I have many main crop figs on my mission look forward to them will share pics when they ripen.There about a inch long right now and look like they won't be ready till mid September.Thanks again.

Martin,

Nice pictures as usual. Have a question for you, how would you compare the taste of the Blk M's breba to the main crop's flavor? I always take off the brebas. Are they worth of keeping?

Navid this is first time i had mission breba from my young plant, late last season i tasted only a few main crop figs as the tree was young and still is young. Those main crop figs were better i do recall.

This season i will taste a few more main ones.
In future i will not keep these breba as i like my trees to concentrate on main figs only in my climate.

But i'm thinking this particular mission might do well in right climate thats plenty long to fully ripen both breba and main crop it would then be worth to keep the breba for me if i lived in such a place and have it inground .
I can only dream of that though.   ; )

Yours was much darker than mine.looks fantastic. Maybe a Borges day or 3 would have made mine better

Martin,

Totally agree with you about the long season and Blk Mission. Some of my Mission's main crop never fully ripens here, but the ones that do get ripe are excellent.

Most of the time I remove all the brebas from my trees so the main crop figs get to rip on time. Next season I will leave few of the brebas on the tree to see how they taste.

You know, I have 3 of them right now, 2 small ones and one big one. Was thinking putting the big one in the ground next year and have the smaller ones as back up plants just in case (in zone 6 with winter protection). What do you think?

 Im probably going to kill one when i do 
as i been thinking next season maybe put one of my elder plants (not mission) in ground for fun cause im stuck here now at least 8-9 more years -long story.

But it usually gets cold here, several years back 23 below zero and last season 18 below zero and then if you factor in the wind well its cold.   ; )

If i do inground i doubt i protect it.
But will make sure i have a spare in container - i dont mind if the large one dies its just 1 less to root prune for a while.

Martin, I might take my chances with planting one Blk Mission in ground next season. Most likely it will die here even if I protect it very good.

Since I have to root prune 14 of my fig and pomegranates trees early next year. And those are in 20 and 25 gallon pots. I wish I could pay someone to do that for me, but on the other hand they might just kill them all. We'll see.

I know what you mean its a real pain . I did the root work late last winter before they awakend cause im just tired of doing it when its so darn cold in garage so i now wait late as possible and pick the best day.

I also have some 25 to 30 g pots there easy pulling out but not so easy doing all the work as you know with them size pots.
Maybe next season i have 1 less for a few years to root prune but i wll stick another type in that pot.

I know, those big boys come out of the pot easily but root pruning them is another story. Out of the 14 trees that I have to root prone 5 are pomegranate trees. IMO, Pom. trees have much faster growing roots than figs.

Yesterday when I pulled out one of my pom. trees (2 yrs old) out of its pot, I could not believe it how root bound it was. Pulled out the next one, it was the same story. One of these days I have to get rid of them since they take too much space in the shed and they are not that productive at all (3-4 poms/tree, each season).
