Hi, there have been a couple previous threads here on planting a fig hedge, and it's something I'm considering too. When I first started on this fig kick, I had no idea I'd end up with possibly about 20 different varieties (assuming I'll have good luck with the cuttings). And multiples of each if I am lucky.
And I'll need a place to plant them. So I was thinking a hedge in front and along the sides of the property would be good. And perhaps some closely planted figs where needed around existing citrus. This is certainly a plan for the future, but it's never too soon to plan.
No frost here so I'll be able to plant in ground. The native soil is clay, but loose, crumbly clay and not packed. We are also on a hillside and there is very good drainage, but the soil remains damp for a long time. There are both commercial lemon and avocado orchards in this immediate area.
Fruiting hedges work here, but I've already used all the easy places for my last plant obsession - blueberries. :) Which are doing quite well. :)
I'm also planning on keeping the figs as bushes so they won't get too tall. Easier to pick, no ladders, and the neighbors won't complain they are blocking their view.
I'm also planning on close spacing, perhaps 4 feet. ??? Some (most?) of my future figs apparently do have FMV and I have no clue how large they will get. The soil will only be minimally prepared - as in just dug and planted and probably little to no amending. I'll use soaker hoses for water, plus a thick layer of mulch.
Any input on having a successful fig hedge is welcome.
