I think THIS is a very good idea...(Fig) Cuttings For A Cause. Apparently, the Useful Gardener was associated with the Paradise Nursery. Here is a reference for your reading pleasure:
Greetings! If you are still looking for Battaglia Green, let me know. That fig originated at our nursery, Paradise Nursery, before we retired and sold the domain. It is a strawberry verte fig with an exceptionally beautiful red interior that has done beautifully here in Zone 7. You can email me from my member page.

There were a number of great figs that came out of an early breeding program at LSU that was later abandoned, as far as I know. Many cuttings were shared and gradually distributed, for testing and just plain interest, without formal naming. Perhaps Smith was a source person?

Here is a link that might be useful: Useful Gardens

Is that the usual Alma she has there? I ordered 6 based on her good review.

Excellent bird-dogging JD.

How different is "Violette" from my (VdB) Violet de Bordeaux (2002.EL)?

Thanks JD for the link. I gladly gave a donation for the cuttings, it for a very good cause. A 200 mile ride is ambitious for a 60 year old unless she rides on a regular basis.

Me too gave that little+ donation for a very good cause...

For all you 'fig-newbies'; Paradise Nursery was a very reputable
source for figs, but unfortunately it closed down some years ago.

Do take advantage of this rare offer...

No thanks to me...Many thanks to Sybil!

@ Brent. Her Alma Gold looks like Alma. It appears to be quite similar to the Alma that Frank (FMD) is growing very well here in Tallahassee and posts about in Unique Problem: Too Many Figs! It is a good fig.

@Jon. I know you have VdB. Echoing Gorgi, is this one different from VdB EL?

This image is from Frank's Unique Problem...

Don't know if it is the same or different, but still want to preserve it. Not everything that is "the same" behaves the same.

I still have a longer term goal of collecting as many things as possible, and then figuring out how to turn it into a long term collection that can be kept and managed and ACCESSED, long after I am not available to take care of it. Have to find some $ for such a project. For now I collect and document. I have way too much invested it it now (time and $) to let it slip away without preservation.

And I hear great things about the taste and low heat requirements of Bataglia Green.  :)

Jon,

Are you sure that Bill Gates is not one of your uncles...

[maybe he should be; you are the top USA 'Bona-fide' king_of_figs.]

Hahaha ha ha, Brent, you are soooo right!  An electric bike would make this sooo much easier!

THANK YOU to all of you who took me up on the fig cuttings offer!  The response was so amazing, from all forums and the blog, that we had to close out the offer (the donation links on the blog are now disabled) and start taking cuttings to pack and send.  Hopefully, we can get everyone just exactly what they requested.  Rob's wondering if he's going to have any fig trees left!

This is a good cause, it's going to be a great ride - and made especially lovely by the joy and generosity of our many fig-loving friends.  What a wonderful reason to be back in touch with old friends we haven't seen since "retiring" from Paradise Nursery - and so fun to make new friends.

You all warm my heart!

Sybil, you rock!  So what do you think about the Alma Gold compared to regular Alma?

She updated her blog page and said Alma is the same, they added the word gold as a descriptor. I am looking for productive figs so it was really a no brainer to give Alma a try and it is good to know it does so well in Virginia Beach.

She also said Violette is VdB from EL.

Hi, Figgers!

Just an update - we were out taking fig cuttings Friday and Saturday - in 50 - 60 mph WINDS!  Whoooo hoooo!  Glad I wasn't on the bike!  Finally got them finished this morning, about 300+ all totaled.  Now we are labeling and getting ready to pack!

I can't tell you how much fun this has been - all of you are so terrific, I can't believe it.  I'll be crossing my fingers that the USPS treats the packages well..... it beats shipping full trees, I know that for sure from experience!

with a grin,  Sybil

Sure glad to hear from you.

You were one of the best in the business and your product was just as great.

Hope you come around more often.
