Hi everybody,

Well this ain't about some xtra rare two of a kind fig but it is a BIg winner here!
Edit  The figs in the bucket amount to 464 the pail is a 3 gl. one.

So far we have picked 830 figs off it, the thing will most likely last for 10 more days this season.

The tree is 40 + years old! Does not drop figs period.
EDIT I added photo of tree, my little wife and the owner

I know, I just hope the baby celeste is like the mother tree!

The man that owns the tree has gave the wife free range of the tree, only thing he wants is a few jars of the fig preserves.

I have to thank Cecil for his generosity.  He's a love and so is Dorcas.

THANK YOU, CECIL!!!  :)))))))

My large Celeste out back actually has ripened some figs in the past week.  I almost fell over when I was out back with my dog and saw the brown figs showing in the tree.  It's tenuously hanging onto most of the figs, but they're a bit dehydrated.  Makes them cloyingly sweet, but delish, except I can only eat a few at a time because of the sweetness.  Oh, but they're good.

The tree ripened the figs because of all the rain we had in the several weeks before now.  It watered the whole yard, not just around the tree, so I think that made a difference.  This drought is a real pain.

Thanks to Cecil, I just may have a Celeste that doesn't rain figs when it is dry here.  We'll see.

Thanks, Martin, for thinking of me about the Celeste Cecil has access to.  That's real nice of you.

Now maybe I won't be whining about it all the time.  And nobody ever even offered me cheese to go with my whine.

Bless you both,

noss

@ Chapman, I really don't have an answer for you other than it got down to below zero for about a week in the 80's
@ Vaplantman Thanks.
@ Tucsonken It has been really hot here (it got up to 104 F already this year.(And it never rains here in the Summer, well hardly ever)
I will also add that the owner of this tree never waters or fert. this tree.
@Noss...You are too sweet with the kind words.

Well,I hope Vivian trial this tree in her backyard and see if it drops fruits or not.
If it does not, then we can be sure there are many strains of Celeste and most of them have a bad gene making them drop.
If the tree drops in Vivian Backyard, then there is something in the soil or climate that the cultivar does not like, that will be the only explanation.

Last year the wife used a ladder and picked a little over 2400 off that tree, I put my foot down on her using the ladder any more, I was worried she might break something important!

Edit   JoAnn I sent you a PM

Hi Herman,

The reason I am really interested in the Celeste from Cecil's neighbor is it is a very old tree.  Cecil said the neighbor told him it's been there since he was a kid and climbed in it.  The neghbor is in his sixties, so the tree might be an older variety like we once had here and still do.  None of my Celestes I had dropped figs in very hot, dry weather back when.

It may be that it's much hotter here now than it was back then, but it could be the variety, too, maybe, but I will see, thanks to Cecil's generosity and friendship.

My tree is dropping its figs now, both ripe and green, since the rain stopped, though I'm watering it.  I'm thankful that the tree gave some ripe fruit this year.  Even the birds and squirrels haven't eaten all of them--yet.

Gene and Linda are coming to visit around noon, so they can try the figs from the tree and see how they like them.

JoAnn,

Is that the fig that was purple, the one you're talking about?  I still don't think that's a Celeste if that's the one I think it is.  How is the tree doing and did you take photos of it with more figs on it?  How did it taste?

noss

Noss, it is the same tree.  That was the breba, I started a thread with main crop fig.  It looks as though it came from a different tree!  The main crop tasted OK, about the same as the breba (I think, I've slept since I ate the breba lol).

If it's not a Celeste, that's OK, I just want to know what it is, and if it improves over time then I will have something to trade!

Cecil, it sounds as hot and dry there as it is here, so maybe my young Celeste will toughen up and stop dropping fruit once it's a little older. It's heavily mulched and gets enough water to keep a fish happy, but the figs still dry up and drop.

Do the figs from your neighbor's tree have a closed eye?

Yes, it would be a shame to damage the basket she was holding and bruise some of those figs... ;)

Just kidding of course. If you are getting that many figs from the tree, a ladder probably isn't necessary!

I had no idea a fig tree could be that productive.

Nope, not doubting that number for one second. :)

Substitute 'Because' for 'if'.  As in: "Because you are getting that many figs from the tree, a ladder probably isn't necessary!"

Last year I kept track of the blueberries I harvested from the yard. I picked over 200 pounds so I know it's fun to keep track. People were surprised I got so many, and that didn't include how much the resident humans grazed. This year I'm not keeping track since the birds have gotten far too many and I wouldn't want to cry.

For as hot as it is in Texas this Summer and how hot and dry it was last year,I can honestly say I am convinced this tree is persistent ,and does not drop any fruits in the unripe stage.
Cecil:If you shake a trunk, does it readily drop the fruits on ground or not?
A tree like Marseilles black vs would not drop them even if you shake the trunk, and that is a measure of how persistent it is.
You have to pull hard on some cultivar before they let go ripe fruits other cultivars will let fruits go the sooner you touch them when ripe?

Hi Herman,

Yes we had the worse drought in this part of the state EVER last year

Still got 2400+ figs last year.

As far as shaking the tree and watch the figs fall, no they stay well attached.(If you look at today's crop you will see where the stem stayed on the tree) after she picked the fig.

I hope the cuttings I have sent to some members prove to be as good as the mother tree (you included) At least we will learn if the tree passes on its good/great traits.

Highest regards

Well Then This tree is persistent 100 percent.
It is even said in some literature that Celeste can be Harvested by tree shakers, because when they are ripe they readily fall to ground, but I guess that is true for some Celeste strains not all Celeste.

This is becoming so much fun, learning about this tree.  I told Cecil that it's all the BS from the cows in that pasture that's got the tree doing so well.  LOL!  There's no BS coming from Cecil, that's for sure.  If the cuttings/trees do as well elsewhere, it will be an amazing Celeste, for certain and I'm hoping it will be.

Yes, Herman, if it does well in my yard, that will be a good trial for my treelet.  I'm finding things very exciting about this tree.

Thanks, again, Cecil.  Please keep the updates coming,

noss

PS--Even if it doesn't prove to be parthenocarpic elsewhere, it will have been an awful lot of fun testing it out all over the place.

@ Noss

It is fun for us as well...We use to wonder about a tree doing good/great at one place and wondering if it could do the same somewhere else!
Like I said I have sent some cuttings to other members.I guess we will find the answer to that question in time.

more later
