Anyone growing Black Jack from Almost Eden?

Early December 2010 I purchased a 4" potted plant from them. After spending 5 months barely growing in a filth medium potting soil I had bought at Wal-mart, I repotted it in my own blend. It began growing much better and greener since then. What I am curious about now is that this season it has gone from growing upright to developing a severe droop. I have tried pulling/tying it up but it has resisted. Here are a few pics. Anyone else notice this on their Almost Eden Black Jack? go4broek, i do not have any plants from them nor that type. But i did have a rather large plant do that in container as we had severe thunderstorm with high winds and that morning i notice plant doing exact same thing as yours. What happened several large roots broke on mine from it swaying i guess. I staked it and a year later its on its own and fine. Try not to pull it "but" wiggle it from side to side and if its real loose some of the larger anchor roots may have broken. Other than that i do not know cause amount of fig on it should not weigh it down like that. Also in the end slip it out of pot and place rootball at angle to main so itsa straight again but you will need larger container to do that. Let us know what you find.

I have a black jack that I just picked up from someone in my neighborhood, I'm not quite sure of it's origin but it also grows at an angle. It's about 2-3 years old and I like the way it looks. __________________ Scott, Long Island ,NY All my figs have been exposed to FMV,some have it, some don't. It doesn't seem to bother them so it doesn't bother me.

Thanks for the response, Martin. We have not had any winds like that to account for that curvature. By pulling, I meant in the opposite direction in an effort to straighten the trunk. It has actually resisted being straightened. It also only started forming that main crop at the end of June so they had nothing to do with the shape. It will be interesting to see what that new shoot is going to do. I have a Black Jack but not from the same source. It does not droop but it is still a youngster. I'll be curious to see if mine does similar next year. I seem to remember that "Black Jack" is considered a "dwarf-type" tree, that has a tendency to grow horizontal branches...wider than tall? Maybe it's the nature of the plant's habit to sprawl a bit. Maybe others can post some photos of "Black Jack" and see how yours measures up against the type. And, for what it's worth, when a branch, or stem, doesn't "do" what I want it to do...I have a supply of vinyl coated #12 copper wire, and I wrap the wire around branch...bonsai style...then bend the branch into a new, more pleasing, position. (Note: Bend slowly over a few days...fig wood has a tendency to be brash, and will snap!). After growing a few months, the wood takes a set, and the wire is then unwrapped, or cut off...and, Voila!....the branch is under my control. : ) I often tell my trees to go "get bent"! : )))))) Frank __________________ Bronx, NYC Zone-7

Good job, Scott. I see what you mean. It looks different than mine though. Could be that mine is not a Black Jack at all. Does yours produce violet terminal tips when dormant and early in the season? @Frank- Thanks for the tip. While I am not crazy about the tree growing that way so close to the ground, I would not want to alter it's shape if that is the way it grows. I only tried to straighten it while I thought it was growing abnormally. Its the only one of that variety and is the only one of the hundreds I have in those rows that is growing into the prevailing wind and towards the North. Thanks Ruben, I'm not sure about what color the tips are when going dormant because I've only had the tree a few weeks. This picture might be better to see it. If you don't like the Quasimodo look, maybe you should let that new sucker keep going and see if it grows straight. They are often very vigorous and perform better than the original trunk--if that's the case, in a couple of years you could clip the old one. __________________ Ken Tucson, Arizona Zone 8b
