This year I will be using 5 gallon SIPs and I will also try the method of burying pots in the ground and removing for the winter.  Just wondering if anyone has implemented both methods in the same year and what your results were.  I know both methods have their pros and cons, but aside from that, where did you get the best performance from?  I'm curious as to what I should expect.  Thanks!

I love my SIPs , both 5 gallon and 25 gallon , but where I have the space to make it possible , I find I get better growth and yield with 5 or 25 gallon pots with side holes that are planted in the ground by tomato planting time.
Haven't noticed that the flavor is much different , all very good !
I love my Sips because most places where I have adequate sun I have pavement and for me Sips out perform regular pots.

Kerry, my one experience with half-burying containers and allowing the roots to grow into the ground resulted in good growth but then a very unhappy fig when I removed it from the ground.  I believe I moved it before it was fully dormant because I felt I needed to do some Fall shuffling due to cold weather.  After that the leaves really sagged/wilted and never recovered regardless of watering. Do allow your figs to become fully dormant before cutting the roots?  I also had very good results with 5 gallon SIPs last season and will continue to use this approach for some figs that are not very cold hardy.

Yes ,I let them go fully dormant before moving.
My soil is sandy so I can bury them 3/4 of their height with no drainage problem and it helps prevent blow over on some of my larger plants.
But I only have space to do it with a few of my plants.

Thanks Kerry.  I was hoping you'd see this thread, as I know you've been using SIPs for awhile.  Glad to hear it's a win win either way!  I appreciate your feedback!
