My next door neighbor has an unknown fig tree on the south side of his garage.  The figs are just getting ripe and he offered me some.  He said his grandfather planted the tree decades ago.  It used to be pruned way down but over the past three years he has only pruned it very lightly.

My guess is that it is a Celeste (or related) but I would be interested to hear what variety you all think it might be.  One interesting thing to note is that it doesn't drop figs in hot weather the way that I have heard Celeste trees do.  Even this summer with many days around 100 degrees he said there were only a handful of figs on the ground out of well over a 100 harvested already and many more on the way.

Beautiful tree, and how did those figs taste?  Could you describe?  Rich, figgy, berry, melon, honey?  What?

Well, my palate is still rather uneducated when it comes to figs.  I've only had these and some black missions from a friend's tree.  But there was definitely a decent amount of sweetness and I suppose one would call it a figgy flavor as well.  I didn't detect any obvious flavors from other fruits.  They were small and enjoyable so one bite is all it took.

I'm still interested in ID'ing this tree.  Anyone want to give it a shot?  Herman/Vasile are you out there?  Thanks!
