How to insert images into posts

I shared this with another member, didn't want the info to go to waste, so I'm posting it in the public area as well. Some of you may notice posts where people are inserting images inside the text in a nice, clean format. This is actually really easy to do ... Note that the info below assumes you are working on a PC (not Mac), and that you understand the difference between a regular mouse click (left-click/left mouse button) and a right-click (using right mouse button). ---------------- If you already have the pictures you want to insert stored online (like at Picasa or Photobucket), skip steps #3, #4, #5 If you don't have your pictures posted somewhere else on the web, start at step #1. 1) Start a new topic OR reply to a post in 'Go Advanced' mode OR edit your existing post in 'Go Avanced' mode. 2) Click on the "Manage Attachments" link and upload the pictures you want in embed in your post. 3) Look back at your post, look just under the box you type your message into, you should see several hyperlinks to your pictures with checkboxes next to them. 4) Right-click one of those underlined picture links and a little menu should appear - choose "copy shortcut" (Note: some browsers may have "copy link location"). This will copy the URL for the image into your computer's virtual clipboard. 5) Put your cursor in the exact spot inside your post that you want to insert your image, then click this icon under the 'font size' box: 6) After you click that image, a popup will appear asking for a URL. You should already have the link to the image you're wanting to insert copied from elsewhere, so without clicking anything, press CTRL + V to paste the URL (from your clipboard) into the entry area and click OK. 7) An image should appear in your post after you click OK. If not, you probably did something wrong, or I screwed up at trying to explain this. If it worked, simply repeat the process starting at step #3 for each additional image. Keep in mind, it is critical to pay attention to where inside the post your cursor is AND to remember to press <ENTER> after posting a picture to force the next picture onto the next line! This process may sound difficult - I don't can't know everyone's level of experience with a computer, so I'm trying to find a good balance between "I'm stupid on a computer" to "I invented the computer, bro!" All the steps are there, and there are actually a few ways to skin this cat, but above is a basic way that requires no knowledge of how BBCODE works. There are more advanced ways to do this, but most people like to keep it simple. __________________ Jason Atlanta/Grant Park area - z8

Wow! I always wondered how people did this. I get as far as the upload feature, but didn't know about the right click thing! Thanks for this info.. I've been using my iPad to just copy the photo, then pasting, but i think the files are too large and were pulled from the forum. I could initially see the photos, but they were gone later. The problem with using the iPad, is there is no Capability to "browse" and select the file.. In fact, when I select "manage attachments" the files to upload section remains grayed out. I guess the solution is to not use the iPad, and keep file sizes manageable.. Hey Mark, I also have an iPad, iPod and iPhone, all running the latest 5.x versions of iOS. I have yet to figure out uploading photos, honestly. The typical method of copy/paste into the text entry area hasn't worked for me. It appears from the Apple device as though it's there, but the moment the post is submitted, the image seems to disappear. __________________ Jason Atlanta/Grant Park area - z8

Oh, and thanks for the thanks, folks, glad to put some useful info out there. Always love seeing pictures, I have heard a lot of people mention how intimidating it can be to post pics at the forum... Hey Jason thanks for your confirmation that simply copying and pasting iPad pictures just doesn't work. i just moved over to our HP laptop and was easily able to upload two photos to one of my previous Hardy Chicago postings. The two photos uploaded with ease.. For now, it looks like the iPad has difficulty pasting photos into such forums.. Great info Jason, thanks. Is it possible to insert images without uploading them somewhere online first, but rather to just upload directly from my computer to F4F? I can do that okay with the thumbnail images that enlarge once you click them, but haven't been able to actually embed a final-size photo in the text. __________________ Ken Tucson, Arizona Zone 8b

Thanks Jason. Your method includes a nice little trick for getting a url to give to the InsertImage function. (Basically adding an attachment as a way to upload and get a url). But I've still got to add: I wish the site editor sw would allow inline pasting without requiring a web-based (url) source. Regular rtf format editor could work, or even just supporting localhost urls or drive locator addresses (which the last time I tried, it didn't like). Or better still, let me use an external editor (allow import of a set of standard file sets, including rtf and maybe a couple of others). Don't get me wrong... I definitely appreciate the tip on the nice trick for faking out the need for a URL (thank you for sharing it!), and you consistently provide great explanations for how to use functions (I love the annotations and overlaid arrows). But still there are some annoying shortcomings in the editor function, that cause you (us) to have to go to those extra steps to paste an inline image, especially if you've got it already sitting right on some directly accessible media (like a disk or other drive). Thanks again for the tips. :-) Mike <edit> Of course, maybe next you'll show me that the posting editor DOES really allow import of standard file formats for things I'd edited with an external editor.
