I just got back from Home Depot and lo and behold, they had a whole pallet of 40 pound bags of crushed limestone. YAY!!!! __________________ Tami SE Texas

Tami , I was just looking for granulated lime today , but will check out HD for the crushed limestone in the morning. I think that was what they used at Belleclaire? The trees all had a layer on top of the soil and I want to try it. I believe it leaches into the soil as you water and if thick enough helps with keeping bugs out (mosquitos here) and helps retain moisture. There was concern voiced earlier in another thread about it compacting over time but I'm still wanting to try it so I'll do my best to keep you guys posted. Hi Tami I'm not an expert, but this is what I do. I use granular lime ( I think it's the same as what you have) and at the end of the season I scrape it off and replace it in the spring with new lime, that is just my method. Vito

Vito, What is your reasoning for replacing it? My thought process was it was good until it disappeared being that it is rock. Can you please explain it to me? I appreciate the effort to help me learn. You guys are just picture greedy :), me too but shhh don't tell. yeah.. it wasn't the one on the link.. it just said lawn lime on the front, but if you read the description on the back it said fast acting lime. garden lime that i use is from espoma. espoma garden lime has no issue whatsoever. i put some on two weeks ago and everything is fine. __________________ Pete Durham, NC Zone 7b "don't talk to me about naval tradition. Tami I use the Belleclare pot culture care for figs. It says to use 1/2 to 1" of Granular Limestone on top of soil 2 times a year, May and August , always remove old Granular Limestone. Vito

Tami, The limestone used as a topping by Belleclaire is Granular. Granular is about the size of sea salt, while pulverized is the size of table salt. The pulverized limestone will cake and form a crust if used as a topping. Also the recommendation is Dolemite Limestone, which has a higher Magnesium content. espoma lime does cake. in some cases, if it's evenly covered over the top of the soil, it will cause water to collect without draining. i have to watch water draining and if it gets stuck, will have to rake the top of the soil to let the water drain. __________________ Pete Durham, NC Zone 7b "don't talk to me about naval tradition.
