Occasionally I get asked how many different fig varieties I've collected since the full blown addiction set in 07/13/11 (my first F4F post), and I usually guesstimate somewhere around 40 or 50 with the understanding that there are many repeaters planted in the orchard and hedges. I finally decided to do a formal count (have I been subconsciously avoiding it?) and man-oh-man was I off! Frankly, I don't know how to feel about this. All sorts of existential questions arise, but I won't bore you with any of them. How about you all? How many unique varieties do you have in your collection? And how long have you been an addict? Frank, I have coined a term for these phenomena... If it makes you feel better, I went through my database and realized I've had over 300 (I might be pushing 400 since I have not updated my database in a while) fig trees which I do not have anymore due to death or distribution. I think I joined the GW Fig Forum in 2005. More than I thought, Counted as I drug them out of Winter storage, 41 different counting a handful of UNK. Have several with duplicates. I've been guessing 125-175 lately and yesterday worked much of the day updating my list. I got very close to 200 and still have some more counting to do. I think I'm going to pull a Martin and get rid of some. Over the winter I narrowed it down to 25 varieties, and about 36 plants. Realistically, I shouldn't go over this amount in order to maintain them properly. As I get to TASTE these in the upcoming years, I may decrease more. If they're all that delicious, I guess I'll need more winter storage space! __________________ Frank zone 7a - VA

I see a lot of decreasing in everybody's collection in future, because, not every fig variety is supposed to be for the given owner's zone and situation. It's only logical, I mean...what's the use of having something you can't fully benefit from. Grow, Taste then Select the onesu really like. Let the rest find a good and proper home. I'm new to this and thanks to all of you guys out there I acquired so many wonderful varieties and it feels great, they are all doing great , so far, but...which one I really want to keep is going to be the big question in a year or two. As it is, I already have 60+ varieties and I haven't even received my last order from UCDavis, I guess they decided to send it next year. But really, will they all be worth keeping? Grow, Taste then Select the ones you really like. Let the rest find good and proper homes.

about 36 for me, I will have a tough time to try and bring it down to 12 or less, the fig shuffle is too much work for less desirable varieties, besides potting into 20+ gallon containers makes my winter garage tough to navigate. Still over 90 varieties. Getting rid many as I find more yummie ones. Also, variants with almost similar taste are to go. No more keeping repeats except for DK as I prune hard in alternate years.

Congratulations, Frank, on starting your collection. When you have 1,000 plants you'll graduate from the Novice stage. Isn't it The Celt who has 800 varieties starting with the letter A? I'm hoping to have 3-5 plants of each of the best 12-30 varieties here and call it good. But I haven't tasted most of the varieties I have and there are many I want to try. This year I should get a taste of a lot of my current varieties. Funny, I dont even know if I really like figs, but Im hell bent on finding out. Ive only tasted 4 varieties and 2 of them were good, the others I could do with out. Of those, only Celeste is the variety I can confirm and it was very good. My son and I ate a whole gallon ziplock bag in 20min. That being said, Im only a year into my fig adventure and to date and Im growing 11 varieties with duplicates of several for a total of 16 plants. Not counting the ones Im rooting right now and some of those should make it aswell.....I say that but my track record to date isnt great for the cupping stage but its definatly getting better as Im on the up swing of my learning curve! Im glad you posted this because I just realized I dont have any green skin varieties!!! I need to work on that ASAP..... Martin would be proud;) __________________ Rob Zone 9a/9b were the too meet. There's one of my enablers right there! Every time I give away cuttings I end up with more than I started with. Blue, when I met Attilio, he was interested in ( I think ) an improved Celeste. I left his house with the green and purple figs, bitter orange, ponderosa lemon, two types of peaches, and oleander. The next time I brought him some plants, he gave me two big bags of escarole from his garden. This year, I'm gonna drop off some plants under the cover of darkness, hopefully I won't get shot! __________________ Rui Southeast CT, zone 6B

I am at 64 now. That should be enough. This will be my first year to taste most of them. Last year tried Celeste, green ischia, mbvs , hc, jh Adriatic. All were great.

I made a garden bed today for the FEW I have. And the survivors are: blk mission, brown turkey, LSU gold, genoa, Sal's, and Hardy Chicago. They are going in the ground on the east side. I have only had one itty bitty brown turkey in my life so far. but, It was fantastic! That was in June 2013; I am waiting for the next one! I do not know... I don't know the number of varieties I have, nor the number of growing plants. In the past year, not counting cuttings, I've given away over 60 in 1 or 5 gallon pots and destroyed a few that were so mediocre I didn't even want to give them away. I still have a great many left. Well over 100 in pots with many duplicates. This year I'm looking forward to tasting a great number of them and only keeping ones that I consider really good. I don't know what that magic number will be. Problem is I love starting the cuttings. It's just plain fun. A rational person with this many trees would call it a day and be done. I hear you Gina. I am close to my fig tree end-point(HA! but seriously...), but I love starting cuttings. I think even when I am done acquiring the varieties I think I need, I am still going to start a handful each winter just to give away. I believe I have 3 in pots, 7 rooting, 2 pending trades, and 2 pending purchases. Wow, this fig thing really does get bad fast, doesn't it? From 0 to 15 in several months. My thought is to ultimately have a core collection of 5-10 tasty, hardy varieties in the ground and whatever I'm trialing will be extra. Have to keep from getting too big a collection to keep the peace at home. Unless I can get her into figs...then it's all downhill.

Hi, I have some 10 varieties but I'm short on space. I'll be removing a young cherry tree to make some place. I see people from Turkey around here have some new strains. I at least saw three strains that I would like to give a try. I would like to find some new dark figs as most of my last added strains are pale. I'm thinking of "noire de caromb" or some other dark one. I'll think of a new spot for that one :) . But for now, I'm already looking forward at tasting the strains I already have as I only started some 6 years ago and some winters and rodents helped me not having too much figs to taste :°°( . Last weekend I visited the mother tree of my "unknown probably Brunswick" . The mother tree has brebas and mine does not ! It took the mother tree 8 years of growth to show the fruits - last year was the first year, and they all dropped ! Am I supposed to wait 5 years more ????? for mine to start fruiting ... That got me mad :°°°( . I started another strain at the same time and the other tree has 5 brebas already ... Well, wait and see ! But selection is ongoing ! __________________ ------------------------ Climate from -25°C to + 35°C Only cold hardy figtrees can make it here

Unless you have Martin's discipline, it is very hard for an addict to refrain from adding "just one more". At least, I am fortunate in having mine in the ground and acreage to play with! How do you northerners (and some Californians) handle so many pots, especially with the fig shuffle? Thank you for making me feel a little less crazy than some of you. 1 Variety, 2 trees. Although I will be getting a second variety from a local fig fan in the near future. I found the forum while trying to figure out what variety I actually have and man did you guys open my eyes to world I didn't know existed. Right now only 18. Then I have 78 cuttings that are rooting. I also have about 160-180 cuttings that are on deck and will hopfully have some of them started in the next couple weeks. Many are duplicates of course so maybe 80 varieties total if I have success in rooting this year. I'm not even going to count. I am so far behind already this year, knowing the number of trees and the number of new cuttings will make it that much more daunting. I ended up with more cuttings to root this year than I was anticipating, but what is really going to kill me is are the pomegranates. I placed a pomegranate cutting order with UCD for this year before I rooted the pomegranate cuttings I had received last year. I thought I would root them, but got around to it. I have a buttload of pomegranates to root. Calvin, perhaps we should form a Colorado fig collective.
