If anyone is around or in Birmingham, AL, check out the fig trees there. They are locate on the right hand side of the greenhouse.

Back in 2011, I was told by a gardner at Botanical Gardens that they were Celeste, Alma, Black Mission, LSU Purple and few others that I do not remember. There are around 10-12 trees and all should have tags. When I was there last week, it was getting late and did not check the tags. Some of those trees are 15+ feet tall and wide.

The first one you show leaves of (going from left to right) looks like a Celeste.

oldoneeye,
Nice photos. Thank you for posting them. If you get a chance, make a trip to Petal FromThe Past in Jamison, AL (30 miles South of Birmingham) and visit their fig orchard as well. You'll be pleased.

I just visited Petals a few days ago actually, and yes, they have a nice little fig orchard. I purchased a few trees while I was there. I recommend anyone in the area visit there. The figs are just a small part of their offerings.

Fair warning, while I was at the office one of the staff members told me a story about what happened to a couple of poachers who got caught harvesting the figs.... Let's just say they didn't get home with them.

Well, I doubt they would care if anyone sampled a fig here and there, but the poachers in the story tried to make off with a couple gallons of them.

Hi, It is a general rule at botanical gardens: you can only touch with your eyes, and being not too close. If every visitor took a leaf and/or one fruit, their trees would be leafless the whole year ... Here nearby there is a Dauphine in the botanical garden, but they don't sell nor gift the cuttings nor allow to pick leaves, stems nor fruits. So I bought one tree from a nursery on the first (and only) occasion that I had.
