I just wanted to post some late season fig pictures and observations from North Florida.

1. Lebanese Haikel:  see saxonfigs posts for a very interesting history of this heirloom fig. Thanks Bill. Unfortunately the birds got it before I could taste it.

2. Melanzana: Thanks Paully. This one did not get tasted because of ants. 

3. MBVS: This one I tasted. Sweet cherry flavor and aroma.

4. Nero: Pretty good

5. LSU Scott's Black

6. Sal's Corleone- planted April 2012 from cutting. Aggressive grower. Prolific producer.

7. Orchard Update. Started September 2011

Wow Frank ,

What a great setup . You have tons of figs left this season , and great varieties too .
Which variety is the one with all the figs and no leaves ? Are they breba or did you strip the leaves ?

Wow, a fig orchard. Very nice looking operation there in Florida. I am curious a bit though why there are so few branches and/ or leaves, esp on next to last pix? Seems one would expect a lot more lateral branch growth, covered with leaves?

Thanks everyone.

John, the one with the brussel sprout appearance is Sal's Corleone. To answer Mark's question as well, the lack of leaves is due to the lateness in the season. Here in Florida, the heat and humidity produce an abundance of rust, killing off the older leaves, however the tops continue to grow new leaves.

I did indeed, go nuts with the air layers! Some have been promised to fig friends, the rest will go on Craig's List or I may try my hand on ebay.

I see you have bird netting on some of these trees.  Did the birds still get to them?

Ah, birds! Don't get me started...
If the fig is anywhere near the netting, they will latch onto the webbing, reach in with their beaks and peck it clean. My melanzana was at least 2-3 inches inside the netting and all that was left was the stem.

I wonder if those nylon socks for apples would work to protect figs from birds, have anyone try those?

here I get squirls taking them as nuts.
