My vote is on Merlot Sunset . Because the wife  just bought my daughter-in-law a 'Sunset Merlot' dinnerware set . I thought the name fit the design of the dinnerware to a T. Just switch the words and Voila' Bass's new fig variety .

Bass,

Great contest.  I’ll play.

Bass  Brown Allentown Fig

I would use what has been done before:  1. Name of the person who brought it to the attention of the forum.  2. The skin color and 3. The location of where it was found.

May be too late.  Just reading through the names.  Fun!

Just saw that I am too late with a name.  Of the five listed, I would go with Merlot Sunset.  There may be a future on Madison Avenue for some people on this forum.  Great names!

Sunfire!  Me, I grow wine grapes AKA vinefera, and nobody should steal the name of a vinefera for a ficus carica.  Should not happen.  Scratch Merlot!!  It's FRENCH!  Not Mediterranean!

No way in this life would I try for the cuttings 'cause I might win and we all know what my luck in rooting cuttings is like.  :)

I love the name Sunfire.  That is so pretty and it does look like the fire of the sun inside.  Yummm.  The fig also looks like a mini cannonball watermelon.

Hey--How about Galaxy because of the stars on the dark background?

So the best name that matches this fig is Sunfire. Twilight won favorites names as well. So Jon and Slingha both win some cuttings.
Contact me with your info I will mail the cuttings next week.

That was a fun contest Bass.  Thanks for running it!  (And for finding it and acting before the tree was gone too).  Thanks for the fun.

Congrats to the winners.

That was fun. I was torn between Sunfire and Merlot Sunset. It's Merlot on the outside and Sunfire on the inside. Congrats to the winners.

I received my sunfire cuttings today. 3 went into a bag surrounded by sphagnum into a dark spot and 2 of the more lignified pieces went into cups with a perlite/vermiculite/spagnum blend. Put a bag on top of each to simulate a greenhouse. Fingers crossed!

Jon & Slingha - please keep us updated on the propagation process.  I'm interested to see how this story ends.  No pressure now since the Sunfire mother tree is gone : ).  I just joined this forum a couple of weeks ago but think it's great how much you all help to keep the fig trees growing.

Funny you should ask.  I literally was checking them 5 minutes ago. Two of the cuttings went into opaque cups in a mix of 45% vermiculite, 45% perlite, 10% sphagnum. They are "tented" with baggies. I can not see the roots since the cups are opaque. There is no top growth present. I dont plan on checking root growth for at least 2 more weeks.

The 3 others are in Moist sphagnum in a dark cabinet above the fridge. 1 of them has just started rooting, 1 is showing initials, and the other one hasn't done much of anything.  But that's where they are to date. I'll update you when I check on them again next weekend!

Here's my update:
These are definitely no easy rooters. I have been trying both the bag method and direct sowing into cups with really well drained soil. 1 of the 5(in the bag of sphagnum) put out some small roots, which I potted. Fingers crossed. No other cuttings have put out roots. Will give them more time.

Nice guesses... but the contest was over October of 2012. :)

Sunfire was apparently the name chosen.

Perhaps the original poster could edit the title of the thread.... :)

Tim no longer posts on this forum but I do know that he was able to root Sunfire. I also have a rooted start and gave one away as well. For me it was a very strong rooter and grower
