Hi,

Newbie here. I'm in SoCal, right outside San Diego. Not a fig collector, just bought some cuttings on eBay (MvsB and Ronde de Bordeaux)...going to give it a go...if they root, going to plant them in ground to replace those thorny shrubs out front.

I love eating figs! Apparently, my youngest do also! Already have a green/yellow unknown variety which I started from a cutting (given to me) a couple years ago. That one just went in ground to replace one of those thorny bushes (can't recall their names...small leaves with yellow/orange berries).

Before picking those other two varieties, was reading up on figs. So many different ones and different tastes. Can't wait for these two new cuttings to take off so I can really compare!

Welcome. There is a lot of info here to help you if you need it. The "search" feature is you friend. Use it to find tons of info on any topic. Good Luck and Happy Figging! (Those thorny bushes may be Barberry - just guessing)

I decided to look up the plant on the internet, looks like they are pyracantha. They look nice, but my boys play out there sometimes...so they have to go. I think previous owners of house landscaped with birds and bees in mind.

Will definitely check out the search feature.

Welcome, RFPC!  There are quite a few of us in and around SD County.  If/when your fig fever kicks in, consider yourself to be lucky to be geographically situated in Fig Paradise as some members call it.  Cuttings to be had everywhere in SD County and beyond.  Being a long time lurker on these forums, I would agree with ADelmanto.  The Search feature will serve you well.  All the best!

Welcome to the forum !
Buy more land ! You'll need it to plant more fig trees :)
If you keep them trimmed to 7' (2m) of height, you would need some 10 trees to have a nice production :) .
You can already make plans for spacing and shaping the trees ... You know, the kind of stuff, we never stick to ... LOL ...

I'm looking forward to growing some figs. I did notice a huge fig tree outside the field of my older son's elementary school. I wish I had more money for more land. The description of all the different varieties makes it worth it to try them all!

Don't we all !!!

Been thinking about asking the neighbor for a price on the 1 acre plot that backs up to our land. It's empty...... and I would even settle for 1/2 an acre...... How many figs could I put in there.......

Hahahaha :-). Oh, my boys would love that...except we don't have a tree big enough for even a small tree fort.

After reading some of the posts on this site, i didn't realize not all figs are equal. Well, not just regarding taste...but propagating some are easier than others while some are finicky. This is very interesting...

The two figs you picked are both great figs!

When the people here get through with you, you will probably consider the tree house.
