Bidding on the Smith fig tree on ebay but cant find much info about the variety. Can anyone help before I go to much higher on the bid? Thanks ahead

i had a cutting that died on me.. so no personal experience on this fig. but i heard it's really good.

Why not buy a smithfig from J.R. for $25.00 plus $5.00 shipping. I got mine last fall and it is growing very well. I manage to airlayer 3 branches and they are doing good.

Wow!  If this was me in your shoes, I'd pray someone outbids me!  Don't know who J.R. is, but his deal seems a lot better.  JR Ewing?  Love that show!

I have been sorry for a high bid before, and luckily, at the last minute, somebody outbid me.  I have my Smith in the form of dormant cuttings which I am currently attempting to root.

8 mins. Left on bid Suzi I love figs so I wont feel bad If I pay a little to much. Im trying to catch up with all the members here.

Unless the fig is super rare one, ask around here and some one will be willing to share or trade. If they are super rare, or you just can't wait... oh well.

Well Suzi by all means if there is any varieties that I dont have I would be more than happy to purchase/ trade
? I know I am new to the forum so I dont expect first priority. But if you have any extra plant/ cuttings I would be more than happy to buy them.

Smith is an old heirloom fig from Louisanna. I bought one tree about 4 years ago. It's an ugly greenish brown fig that tells you when their ripe by oozing a WHOLE lot of honey from the eye! It is the best ugly honey fig. It look a lot like Black Maderia and taste pretty close to it too. I absolutely adore Smith. The figs are very rich. To me, in a blind taste test Smith taste just like Black Maderia.

On my drive to Houston this March, I bought just about all of the Smith fig trees I could find. I bought 4 or 5 from Dalton and 2 from JR. Today, I have 8 Smith figs. So, if you have one, take good care of it. And next year when it fruits make sure you're sitting down when you take one bite!

here is some info from Dalton's web site:


SMITH - A superior, old fig cultivar that has been in the Becnel family for over 100 years. It is a big, flattened, yellow fig with brown shading. The color of the flesh is a deep red and it has a drop of honey at the eye. The quality of this exceptionally sweet fig is outstanding. It is considered "the best fig" by those who know and grow it in the parishes close to the mouth of the Mississippi river.

Jeff, I'm only an hour and a half from the mountains so yeap we could meet. However, I don't think Smith would survive the harsh winters there. They get -10 degree temps there and Brown Turkey is king.

my latest policy is don't get figs that i can buy from a nursery. only collect the figs that requires years of waiting before it's readily available on this forum. that cuts down on number of figs that i'm going to collect. of couse, i never listen to myself.

As you all read the different opinions on the smith fig,i have to tell all of you what J.R. told me when i asked him what fig he like the best,and he said quote: The one i got in my mouth!!I grow 12 varieties and i do not want any more till i find out how all of these figs taste.So i have to wait a few more years,no maybe next year,everything is looking good this year. J.R. is a cool cat,like him a lot.

Dennis,

My Smith figs have an acid "bite" along with their sweetness.  Do you find that with yours?

As for the honey that comes from the eye of the Smith--I like it when the honey gets dried up and becomes chewy like taffy.

It doesn't bother me that they're ugly--They're only going to get chewed up anyway.....  ;D

Noss, where is your tree?  In ground?  In pot?  If your tree is having a strange or bitter taste, I would recommend checking your soil.  Figs can survive in just about any area but if its soil (aka food) is not good then this can cause a change in fruit production.  The figs could be deformed, the taste could change, etc.  I would change the soil or amendments to the soil and see what happens.
