Hello everyone on the forum,
I am a newer member to the forum and I wanted to formally introduce myself. My name is Zach and I am currently living in the Baltimore area. I have always been an avid gardener but my interest in figs started about 5 years ago while living in Colorado when I tried figs for the first time. It took me until last year when I got my first fig (some unknown variety I got at Lowes for $3 that I think is a brown turkey) and am now hooked on growing figs. I had been watching the forum for several months before I first joined and I have really enjoyed reading and learning about figs. Since joining I have started trying to root some cuttings from my tree and some golden celeste I received from a member here on the forum (my apologies if I offended you by asking soon after I joined, I was naive and excited about the opportunity of acquiring more figs, thank you for your patience). I am also hoping to buy a few more varieties in plant form this year as well as try some more cuttings if I am successful with the first batch. I am looking forward to expanding the variety of figs that I have and learning more about growing/propagating them.
I also wanted to say thank you to everyone for their openness in sharing information on this forum about all things figs- it has been very helpful and I have learned a lot.

Zach

Welcome. I am fairly close so the growing is great here with relatively mild winters.

Welcome. Im all out of cuttings but hit me up next fall and we will see if we can get you a few more trees. Warning this is a drug, once you get one you will get another and another then you will have 50 maybe more. but like some drugs this one is fun.

Welcome Zach,

This is a great forum, vey nice folks here and much to learn. I understand how exciting it is to learn of all these different varieties of figs and of course you want to get started quickly. Newbies usually hang around for a short time before anyone offers cuttings so you got lucky and timed it just right. Sharing is one of the things that makes this forum so great. Good luck with your cuttings and remember when your trees are grown to send a few cuttings to the newbies that join the forum then.

Greetings Zach from rainy bc where a handful of varieties do well to remind us how sweet summer can be regardless of duration or intensity. I'm sure you'll find the answers to what does best in your location - on this site!

And good evening and welcome Zach

I'll bet you didn't even plan on purchasing a Brown Turkish fig tree when you went to the Lowes store! That's how we started with our Hardy Chicago, and Then a Celeste. As others have said, this is a fairll decent area for growing figs, with our relatively mild winters, except for the Snowmageddon a few years Back. If you plant your fig in the ground, you only have to keep it well protected from those few nasty days that have yet to arrive here.

Good Luck!

Hello all,
Welcome aboard Zach.
My name is Luigi. I am a new member also.
One of my hobbies is gardening. I love being outdoors.
I'm from Chicago.
My experience with fig trees:
When I was small, before I was 10 yrs old. My dad gave me this yellow fruit with a white interior. Wow! It was Delicious! Yeah, too bad the trees don't bear fruit throughout the year. Little did I know there was a down side to growing these trees in zone 5. They require winter coverage. It requires a little bit of time, but it pays off when the figs are picked. Nothing beats fresh organic figs eaten from the garden.
If anyone needs any advice on growing fig trees in cold climates feel free to ask me, I'd be more than happy to help. Those who live in warm climates, I'm jealous.
I'm going to snack on some dried figs. :)
Have a good evening,
Luigi

Zach & Luigi,
A warm welcome to the Forum. Always glad for new arrivals. I'm kinda new myself, but in a short period of time I have learned a great deal about figs (with more to learn), and also have met some really nice people. Looking forward to hearing lots more about your fig adventures in the future.

Wecome Zach,

It's good to have you here.  There is so much knowledge flying around, about figs, that it's enough to keep your mind reeling.  :D

Welcome Luigi,

It sounds like you have a lot to contribute to members in the cold climates and you have to be a dedicated fig-lover to grow them in those areas.

Zach/Luigi....and all newer Figs4Fun members....WELCOME!

Read, everything from the past postings.  It's a good reference project, and you will get a good sense of some of the  problems and cures, growing methods, over-wintering options, fig varieties, etc.  All very interesting information that you find nowhere else.  Everyone here will be willing to help you with any difficulties that may come your way.

The growing of a fig trees is probably one of the most rewarding of endeavors.  You will have almost "instant" success, because figs set fruit on new wood, and if you start out with a fruit-bearing, older, tree, you're good to go!  I've been growing since 2007 and never regretted starting.  It just keeps getting better every year...and it's fun.

In addition to all the hundreds of named varieties, keep your eyes peeled for neighborhood, trees growing in your area, especially, if the tress grow unprotected, and still bear, and RIPEN figs.  These trees might be a great prospect if you can get some cuttings from the owners.

You will have a great time posting comments and questions of this forum, and the learning curve is fast, and quick results will follow.  This coming Summer, you will taste figs that YOU grew, and that you picked from your trees.

Enjoy!

Frank
