Ronde de Bordeaux. The first ripe fig of the season. RdB is a baaaad fig (not baaaad meaning bad but baaaad meaning gooood). One wish for RdB - more productive here in 8B. It may do much better in a 30 gallon pot versus the 7 gallon pot it currently resides in. Note. It was overcast and drizzling when it was picked and photographed, i.e., the skin was not as dark as it appears.

Awesome, thanks for sharing the pics. I'm so lucky I was given one by Mike, still a baby in a one gallon but it has a bright future.

JD I bet if you put it in the ground in a couple years you will have more than you know what to do with it, Baud says it makes great dried figs too.  

This one looks great, I have another month to wait before I taste mine this year, but hoping they taste better than just sweet this year.

JD, I have 2 RdB trees - one in pot culture and the other in ground. For productivity, it is the in ground one. We had some outstanding brebas recently after they had shrivelled a little.

I have 2 in ground, the one from Baud is doing better than the one from dany, but I just planted the one from dany in ground this year and it will have about 50 figs, bauds I may get half a dozen as it diebacked when I wrapped it wrong last winter.

Those look delicious, JD. I have a horse shelter in the pasture behind my house, and the 3 sides are outside the pasture. I decided I'd like to train an espalier on the South facing wall with figs. After talking with Harvey C, I decided on RdB. I planted 2, one from Bass, and one from Marius. I'll train them to horizontal cordons. I've done Lemons, apples, magnolias and pears over the years, but this will be my first with figs. I'll post pics as they go. IMG_3043.JPG  IMG_3047.JPG

Jd go in ground, i grow mine inground in zone 6 no winter protection. it does get top killed but comes back. and grows very quickly.

Thanks folks. Ground it is and shall be. I started a large layer this week in hopes of having it grounded in the Spring.

I've got mine in ground, but it's the first year for it.  Either it doesn't like it's spot, or it's a little too hot for it here.  No figs yet.  Looking forward to tasting some one of these days.  Good luck with yours, JD.

I've been shying away from Ronde de Bordeaux, as it is said that it is a huge tree .

Until now, I've been shying away from both "Rouge de Bordeaux/Pastiliere" and "Ronde de Bordeaux" .
Those two strains are highly recommended but I don't see them ( last / last long) in gardens ... What the hell ? Where is the problem ? Not enough cold hardy ? Not enough productive /reliable in Zone7 ?

Ok,  I figured out that I still need to test those two strains along with Brunswick and find out what the trick is... But I still did not buy a Ronde because of its final size ... End of this year or next year perhaps... Time will tell !
Do you have a pic of a mature leaf or stem ?

You should be able to control the size of any fig tree with pruning. N'est pas?

The RdB I have in pots are growing well. We are in zone 7 too. I would not hesitate to grow a few and see how well they do.

JDSfrance, I have RdB in ground, it died back to ground but its about 3.5 feet tall with about 9 branches that I have left for now, many others were pruned off.  I may get about a dozen figs off it come october too yet, we will see.  I would not worry so much about the size but just do a heavy pruning off established trunks for you as the re growth is very strong then around this time of year you can prune back the main branches and keep the small ones off with lots of smaller branches to produce figs for you, this is my plan for my zone and I believe it will be a good one.
