Quick question which may not be so easy.

In searching around for sources for Stella yesterday, I came across Burnt Ridge.  They list their Stella as "Cordi ('Stella')". 

I see a few references on the internet which tie Stella and Cordi together, but it all references with "Cordi" seem to originate from BR Nursery. 

I also see references from a GW post and/or the F4F Variety DB that Stella may possibly be Adriatic. 

I see that One Green World appears to be the original commercial source, acquiring the cuttings from a property in Oregon, supposedly an Italian sailor brought the fig over and named it after his wife (Stella).

Can anyone clear up the story or lineage any more than that?  OR tell me which facts above are correct?

My Stella in no way resembles Adriatic. Can't remember which nursery it came from (off gthe top of my head). See http://figs4fun.com/Thumbnail_Stella.html

My Stella looks exactly like Jon's pictures. My source is from a local nursery. Stella is a late ripening variant & it's ripening process is slow. No doubts it is a good fig. Its fruit shape does not look like Adriatic.

Jason, I will try to email  pictures of JH Adriatic. No idea how to post pic's yet in the forum.

Got them, thanks Paul.

I guess my only question now is ... where did the name "Cordi" come from?  If you do a Google search for "cordi" "stella" fig there are quite a few sources using both names to describe the same fig.

I just wonder if maybe the fig is from the Cordi family's property, or maybe some nursery just decided to call it something else to increase interest.  I can't figure it out.

Jason:You will,never find all the needed information.
What is good,about you is:
You live in zone 8,and Stella,will do wonderfully,in zone 8.
Get it from One green world,or other source that guaranty it is the original Stella,and you will love the quality of this cultivar.
It resist rain very well,so it will have no problems in Georgia.

Thanks Herman.  I'm always very curious who is to blame for the fig-confusion, which is why I wonder about the "Cordi" name origin.

I bought one from Burnt Ridge yesterday.  One Green World scared me with their bad ratings @ Garden Watchdog.  Seems 50/50 that you will have a bad experience with them.  Burnt Ridge was much better looking on ratings, and the shipping was $14 for 3 plants, so Ipicked up an Atreano, Stella and Conadria, since the price was very good on Atreano and Conadria....although I have some cuttings for Conadria already in baggies.

Don't know anything about the bad rap one green world has but I can honestly tell you I purchased about four or five bare root fig trees from them about three years ago and the only issue I have with them is their shipping charges.

When I received them I put them in the pots with the potting mix and after a couple of weeks the leaves started forming and by mid summer I had some of the most beautiful fig trees ever.

Then we got hit with a brutal winter, Need I say more?
The last couple of winters I've lost many fig trees including the Stella.

Hopefully I don't get hit as hard the year.

If my opinion matters any I say go ahead and take the dive and order one from OGW. Stella is one of the best figs out there and you won't be disappointed.

Jon also mentioned he may still have some.
I'd rather give him the business than to burnt ridge or ogw.

Right On Rafed. There are a few other regular long time members selling fig variants too and they are all 1st class.

Now that I've learned much more about figs. My first choice of sources would be either Jon, Bass, Gorgi, Adriano and a few more out there whom I've yet to deal with.

I have relatives that ask me for fig trees and this summer there will be quite a few that will love me. Because some of the ones I purchased from the unreliable sources will be given away.

between you and me it's dirty. To them, They got a fig tree (LOL).

I have purchased from a few of our own. I most recently had a great buying experience with Bass. I am also trying to buy from two other members, but... In time.

If you want me to explain what I'm talking about with gardenwatchdog and bad ratings, I will. Place a lot of value n other people's experience. This is how we learn not to buy from places like TyTy Nursery here in GA, TyTy is a scam. I try to look every nursery up at various places before buying.

I must say, every recommendation I have gotten from a forum member about another forum member that sells plants and cuttings has been amazing so far.

I bought my Stella from One Green World along with four other fig trees.  This was about three years ago.  All five trees have done very well for me.  I personnaly have not had any problems dealing with One Green World.

How long ago did you guys purchase from OGW?  Almost 70% of all of their negative feedback @ Garden Watchdog are from the last 12 months.  Prior to 2009, they had almost exclusively positive feedback.

The bad feedback sounds pretty serious too, almost sounds like it's a totally different nursery than it was in recent years.  Mostly poor packing complaints, plants much smaller than described (4" instead of 18"), plants dead, this kind of thing.  People spending hundreds of dollars and being let down.  It almost seems like the nursery is in dire straits, or maybe was taken over by new ownership?

I've had mine for 4ish years. Don't have and pros and cons re: the nursery, just that mine had originated there, and therefore my pix reflect what they sold 4ish years ago, since they was dome difference of opinion on what constituted a "Stella".

I was just mindlessly googling Stella Cordi today and guess what popped up:

Nice research Dale. I've dealt with OGW for several years and only had one problem, but it is an important one. I received a Hardy kiwi which died within a couple weeks after receipt, so I wrote requesting a replacement or money back. They told me they do not guarantee their plants, that they ensure that what they ship is healthy and if it dies it's on me. That was maybe 2 years ago and I thought that stunk.

I bought my Stella from Almost Eden.   I hope it's the real deal.   Pretty leaves.   Maybe a fruit or two this fall.....

Dan, don't worry looking at the leaves I can tell you its definitely Stella. You will love the taste of it once it fruits.

I continue to Keep my initial testimony of Stella,I made in 2009.
Now in 2012,is just as good tasting,and good producer,and it ripe satisfactory well,even in Summer 2011,and 2012,the worst Summer season for figs tree we had,here in northeast Philadelphia.
A good relyable delicious fig tree cultivar,and if it is good here is good in most climates of the USA where grapes and fig, can be grown.

Hi Vasile,

Good to know you're still high on this variety.  I'm in a spot that's a few zones colder than yours (zone 5a), and from all the reports about this variety (Stella), I had decided to seek it from Jon's cutting sale.  Didn't get this one on this year's exchange, but maybe in the future.  (Note:  I'm VERY happy with the cultivars I did get from Jon this year though... so please don't anyone misinterpret my remark to think anything other than great pleasure with Jon's cutting sale... my remark was more about reinforcing how interesting Stella seems).  The reports from you and others make Stella sound very appealing, so at some point hopefully I can try it out here in a colder-still-than-yours climate.

Are any of our Canadian or other zone 5 growers growing this one?
