Yes indeed one can certainly grow fig tree in colder area's .

Same as Dieseler...use to grow all my fig trees in ground(16 of them)...then switched to potted and container fig trees...don't think I will ever plant another fig tree in the ground again.

Jimmy...the 16 trees that I have to wrap every winter are getting to be a bit much at my age...the potted fig trees are a lot less strenuous for me to handle. I have nothing against in ground trees other than that.

i am trying to find kinds that will grow well outdoors with little or no winter protection. I have done alot of reading and all the info states that it is possible to get a fig tree used to your unprotected climate it just takes time. for example as a young tree protect it over winter, and evey year following take some of that protection away and the end result should be a tree that will no longer require protection. unless of corse you get one of those colder/wetter than normal years.
