well, i mean it's great today.. and it seems like it's going to be fine next week. after that they are calling week of rain and another week of cloudy/rain after that. i don't know what's going on, but the weather this yr so far has been just bunch of rain after rain.

i hope it all rain out in the spring to help with vegitative growth, and hold off on the rain a bit during the summer for the figs to ripe. but just enough.. i hate watering grass, what a waste of good water.

talking about which, i better put some more slow release fertilizers on top of my outdoor containers. at least i don't have to fertilize them during the rain that way.

I hate cutting grass. What a terrible waste of good fig growing space...

Did get flooding rains couple weeks back and county was declared a disaster area .
Then things dried out, last night some needed rains came for our fig plants.

Now temps will drop into mid 30s at night this weekend and some of the plants will have to be moved but things are looking better afterwards.

Sorry for the not-so-perfect weather, guys.  It's because I started figs this year.  You know, like when you wash your car and it rains immediately.  ;)

In ground fig here, Grimo Natalina, has also leafed out.  pinched a few brebas off of it.
might have to wrap it up again for the lows early next week.

What are you going to wrap with?  I am planning for floating row cover, burlap, bubble insulation and a tarp, maybe some insulation below the tarp on the newly planted trees.

oh.. they all broke bud long time ago and starting to fill out with leaves. but the temp hasn't been consistent enough or something.. the main crop has not shown up. i know at least VdB should have shown figs by now.. but it's still thinking about it. only tree that has any figs on it is Ischia White with two lonely main crop.

It's been rainy and overcast here in Maryland too for the past week.  On Sunday it's suppose to finally only be partly cloudy.  My trees are really wet and I saw a slug near them.

Dropping to 34F tomorrow night. Took in all my newly rooted back in the garage.

Thinking about hosing down the rest with water before sunset.
Am a bit worried about my Issai Kiwi. It's loaded with little flowers. Hope they don't get effected too much by it.

Low 40s Sunday, Mon, Tues nights. What the heck?
I thought I was done w the shuffle but gonna bring the youngsters back in.

Is this caused by the Cicada's? El Nino? Global Warming?

Snowing here today. Big-wet-dog-kiss flakes. Seemed almost, well, Christmassy! My trio of fig trees are pouting in the mud-room.

tomorrow low of 43 and monday low of 36. i think i'll let them ride it out.. i might bring in the Black Madeira and Figo Preto on monday night. moved White Greek and one of the Black Madeira to 10 gal today, and Col de Dame Blanche to 4 gal. lime the older trees and fertilized them. probably do the same for the 1 gals tomorrow. this weather is getting me down. i want to see the figs coming out.

Expecting it to drop to around 28f to 32f over night tonight.
I think I'll bring in some more into the garage and let the bigger ones ride it out after a good hosing down.

Doubt this short term temp drop will effect things too much. But it looks like it will slow things down for a bit.

I might even take in some of the ones in the garage into the house. Still have some tender ones that stayed in the garage till now and were getting sunlight while the garage door was open.

Nonetheless,
I thought we were done with Old Man Winter. This is a big kick to the groin.

yupe.. dropping below 32 at this point is a kick in the groin. last year when i let them ride out, some of my trees had frost damage. but they bounced back. none of them were newly rooted 1 gals tho..

The weather service has posted a freeze warning for tonight.   28-33 degree temps are projected.  I have my sprinklers set to go on my peach trees.

Here is a shot of my garage.  Can't get in or out.   Hopefully after this, the shuffle will be done.

Put some in garage last evening including the Caromb cultivar and Madeira as i had a few in past (caromb) that died in winter storage when young this one made it last season as winter was mild so i not risk it along with some small plants.
Tonight cold again then thats it as it will be smooth sailing till later in fall.

Use Christmas lights.  Hang them in your trees and at sunset cover with a blanket and over that plastic.  I cover a whole row of plants like that and they do OK to the high 20s.  The plastic has to reach to the ground on all sides.  I tuck it under the pots.  This is partially why I keep mine in a  5 foot wide row.
